@benjaminhollon FYI I've just been marking an assignment involving writing a CLI (in Haskell) and it turns out typical CLI behaviour isn't obvious to students:* Gets all its parameters from the command line.* Doesn't prompt for user input.* Writes output to stdout.* Writes error messages to stderr.* Produces an exist status code showing whether or not there was an error.* Provides online help.* Can be integration tested by launching a process. Please consider this for your intro.

@kev Why not encourage Meta to create Mastodon accounts, share their plans openly, and solicit open feedback? 😉

@webmink Seems like they could help by adding something like "Zoom will never use audio, video, or chat content for training AI models without customer consent" to their ToS.#Zoom

@hayley Doesn't the optimal default depend on the GC algorithm?

@hayley I was simply missing some context as you didn't say which garbage collector you are talking about. I have worked on GCs in the past and the algorithms vary greatly in their ability to operate in parallel...

@hosford42 @philpem Pretty simple? The maths of feedback loops involves, for example, Fourier transforms, if you're concerned about whether or not the loops stabilise. I wonder if that's relevant to evolutionary systems?https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Control_theory

To those doing Advent of Code this year, in any language. What's the least effort approach to parsing you have found?I find this aspect somewhat tedious and not really the nub of each programming problem. Or is it just me and you love writing parsers, in which case do say?Boosts appreciated.#AdventOfCode

How important is supporting account portability to the future of the Fediverse?Bluesky's AT Protocol cites account portability as one of the main reasons for not reusing ActivityPub https://atproto.com/guides/faq#why-not-use-activitypubHow important do you think account portability is?Please boost for visibility and comment with your thinking.#ActivityPub #ATProtocol

Account portability and the social web https://underlap.org/account-portability-in-the-social-webI believe this is an important topic for the Fediverse. Please boost for visibility. Thanks to @dottorblaster @jamesravey @hcj @mima @hirad @devnull for commenting on my earlier survey on this topic (https://fosstodon.org/@underlap/111617691764389915)#ActivityPub #ATProtocol #AccountPortability #Fediverse

@mike @johnonolan Great episode - thanks!John, I'm not sure private messages are sufficient(ly private) for your authentication needs. Have you looked at stuff like IndieLogin and WebFinger as ways of abstracting logins to a common user@domain identity?See this page for some of the considerations: https://indieweb.org/WebFinger and my own collection of info https://wiki.underlap.org/en/link-relations

What would it take to add decentralised identity (e.g. W3C DIDs) to the Fediverse? Who is already working on this?Bluesky's AT Protocol is a great proof of concept, but probably isn't the endgame. Abstracting Fediverse identity using hostnames and WebFinger is another useful experiment, but again probably not the endgame.#DecentralizedIdentity #ATProtocol #W3C #ActivityPub

Just finished reading the "Autocracy, Inc." by Anne Applebaum.A well-researched and compelling account of how autocracies operate and co-operate to further their aims and undermine liberal democracies. The author calls on everyone who believes in truth, freedom, and democratic principles to join together to combat and expose the activities of autocrats. This book is highly relevant in a world whose rulers include Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Donald Trump.
