@clock @thegibson As a manager, my rule to promote a motivated team is that it is always either "we succeeded" or "I screwed up".

@dave Ironically, their podcast push was what drove me *away* from Spotify despite being a big podcast consumer.

@trisweb @davew One side will roll back the rights of women and LGBTQ people and in fact has already succeeded in rolling some women's rights precisely because one of the candidates was president and put two people on the Supreme Court. One side will not.So if you say both candidates are equal, you are implicitly saying the rights of anyone who is not a cis man is not important.Since Sedaris is not a cis man, it's obvious why he'd use the analogy he did.

@ZachWeinersmith If what I read is accurate, a book back then might have sold for $1 and royalties were 15% or more , That's $1500 in a day. Not bad when a lawyer would expect $1200 in a year.https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=hvd.32044093010528&seq=37https://libraryguides.missouri.edu/pricesandwages/1900-1909https://victorianweb.org/authors/dickens/pva/pva77.htmlGiven population sizes, and the markets being more regional, 10k was probably a much bigger percentage of the market.

@ZachWeinersmith I think it's a lot like the way people in the pre-flight era tried to fly by copying birds. It was kinda/sorta on the right track, but on the other hand, "add more/bigger wings" wasn't what got people into the air. It was trial and error and improved understanding of how flight actually worked.I think neural nets are somewhat related to part of how AGI might happen, but I also think that we won't succeed without *understanding* what intelligence is.

@futurebird My wife used her chemo-related downtime to fill out a few hundred Ohio-bound postcards. I mailed them off for her yesterday. My handwriting is so terrible that I'd have done more harm than good if I'd done it.
