The Rajah Brooke birdwing, Trogonoptera brookiana, one of the largest butterflies. They are so big that they look bird-like in flight. Not that rare to find in Malaysian forests, usually they skirt around the edges and puddle in streams. The male is more common, but this is a female, with blue patches on the hind wings and a bit more white on the forewings. This one was feeding quite high up, I needed to use my telephoto lens to get this shot.#entomology #photography #lepidoptera

I just spotted this majestic bird flying through the canopy of the Malaysian rainforest. It has such showy colours and such a long beautiful tail.Any idea what it is? /s#birdsOfMastodon

This was a toungue in cheek statement. It's a feral chicken on a branch. (Which technically is a red junglefowl...)It did fly really high though.

Hello again everyone. I just moved instances so this is my reintroduction. I'm trained as an entomologist and ecologist with some interests in statistical #ecology and #taxonomy. Although these days I find myself working more with #UrbanEcology and #SciComm, with some projects looking at the relationship between Malaysian food, art and biodiversity, as well as some ongoing #CitizenSci initiatives to study urban fireflies.

Helo.Spotted this strangling fig growing out of an old phone booth. These figs get into the strangest places. Looks a bit like an altar to some sort of urban regeneration. #urbanFicus

Instead of being intimidated by a dauntingly large project, try breaking it up into small tasks and being totally overwhelmed by them.

It's really weird seeing USAians say that "girls are bad at math" like it's some sort of universal experience. In Asia there's the expectation that girls are more diligent and therefore stereotyped to be good at math, and they regularly outperform the boys.

@john @llewelly @u0421793 @AmyIsCoolz @alcootatooter @gay_ornithischians Non-western traditions also have concepts of grouping animals into different types based on observed characteristics or behaviour. It's a very important skill for hunting or foraging.Higher level classifications also exist in indigenous cultures. Although it's not as systematic as our current biological classification.

@AmyIsCoolz @alcootatooter @gay_ornithischians @john @llewelly Biologists don't talk about species concepts in polite company, otherwise it always ends up in the philosophical equivalent of a bar fight. There are no winners and there's just a huge mess on the floor. There are plenty of species concepts available, but I'd argue that the idea is so enduring because the concept of species is very useful for communicating about a set group of living things.

@AmyIsCoolz @alcootatooter @gay_ornithischians @john @llewelly But it's good to keep in mind that each species is a testable hypothesis. New techniques, evidence and assumptions can be used to support or re-evaluate the hypothesis that it is a discrete category.(This is all from a biologist perspective since we have more to work with than bones.)

@john @AmyIsCoolz @alcootatooter @gay_ornithischians @llewelly No. There are multiple species definitions. So there are many sets of assumptions in which you can define a species. Morphospecies have the assumption that similar morphology belong to a distinct group. Genetic species have the assumption that a distinct group has a common gene pool. Biospecies is about interbreeding. But all of these can be tested in living organisms. A lot of species can be redefined as we learn more about them.

@john @AmyIsCoolz @alcootatooter @gay_ornithischians @llewelly And in some cases using multiple techniques show similar results, leading us to conclude that all these are detecting a signal of some sort of unique discreet lineage or gene pool or collection of characteristics. And in other cases it's not as well supported and whether the species is real is put into question. Like any scientific hypothesis, a species can be tested and evidence on whether it is real or not can be obtained.

@john @AmyIsCoolz @alcootatooter @gay_ornithischians @llewelly There is the pragmatic use of species for communication. Yes, species are subjective definitions of a natural phenomenon and in the case of paleontology it might not be describing an actual group of extinct animals. But it's useful to have a name to use when talking about something. It's an agreed upon way of talking to each other so we know we are talking about the same thing.

@john @AmyIsCoolz @alcootatooter @gay_ornithischians @llewelly That's a good question. Honestly, where we draw the line is subjective and based on human judgement rather than a hard criteria.I'll sleep on it and see if I can come up with a better answer, but that's all I got for now. Thanks for a really interesting discussion.

Yesterday I was asked, as a scientist and field ecologist if I believed in spirits in the forest. I replied, "Definitely, there's a lot of weird shit that goes on in rainforests." It isn't just me, all my colleagues have similar experiences. When I train new students, I always make it a point to tell them about the 'adat' or taboos whenever entering the forest. You are entering someone's house, so you better behave. A forest must be respected, otherwise it plays tricks on your mind.#ecology

A question for the makers, is it possible to use a 6V LiPO battery, the one that they use for e-bikes, to power a Raspberry Pi 5?I can use a buck converter to drop it to 5V, but I was wondering if it would have the 5A required by the Raspberry Pi 5.#makers #raspberrypi

We should take a moment to appreciate how #gazaVerified shows the potential of the #fediverse. Blocked and suspended on corporate controlled social media, @joynewacc has managed to organise mutual aid for gazans suffering the #gazagenocide with the help of @aral .With media of all kinds becoming more controlled and censored, this is a way forward. We need to build the social media to resist genocide, not enable it.

The Malay word "Comot" doesn't seem to have an English equivalent. It means "Messy in an endearing way" and is usually reserved for babies and cats.

This is a question made for Mastodon: If I want to learn how to make a wiki with an attached forum, where should I start? At the moment I only know basic HTML and CSS.If possible I'd also like to self host it.#wiki #webdev
