@marquesedliddle The key with sprints and free writing is to get into the flow of letting the story come out despite the imperfection of the grammar that it flows from. There's no sense in editing it in place if you're going to come back later and do the same thing, but with more perspective. That's the objective with free writing is to disable the editor and just let words come out. Sort of like horse blinders, focus on one thing and move in one direction. Once the internal desire to change things in place is suppressed, then sprinting becomes easier and output increases.

He's about 23, a dissuaded reader that probably put down books in high school despite having poured through them in his earlier years. Was big into 90s Fantasy and earlier. Has a disdain for the current state of video game writing and is desperate for something different.

That realism is paramount. It's not. On the other side of the coin, The Rule of Cool should never supplant the grounding of a story. To do so places a narrative firmly in post-modernist territory. The balance between these two is where the real art happens.

My protagonists transform from being loyal to themselves as a person to loyalty to an organization by which they have agency. The contention is the dedication to the perception of an idea between them.I'm not much of a collectivist, but being an atomized individual is as bad as being a subjugated collectivist. There's a balance, and that is the reconciliation of one's own vision of how they want to interact with the world and the means to contribute to something greater than themselves. That's how I tend to organize my fiction.

Vision. I have stories to tell and I want to tell it well. When things get hard, I'd much rather hear I suck than to be humored with empty praise. I want to know where I stand. It's fine to struggle and lash out in frustration. That's the point when you're on the brink of discovery.Whatever else comes in between is part of the process, to be adored.

Too much lore. I despise info-dumping and avoid it like the plague. The world should be developed via the narrative, either in dialog or narration. There are times for rising tension and falling tension during a story, but the first part of the book should almost always be rising tension.

In Machined Hearts, the cyberpunk serial I'm currently writing, the private eye main character Adrian has been hot on the tail of the villain. After chasing him through the depths of an ancient city buried deep beneath the megalopolis Nocturine City, she uncovers a secret hidden beneath the earth: Magic exists and has been hidden away, suppressed by the monopolistic Crescia Consortium to drive sales of cybernetics. They've committed significant resources in order to subdue it enough to prevent the mechanisms that used to seep into every living creature from occurring. I've been playing around with this idea being the big reveal and what turns Adrian's world upside down. The reason why I think it could work is that a) it's maintained by few, everything is automated and b) the main villain is ancient herself and understands the implications of letting it out into the world (loss of power).

I used to be. From when I started taking writing seriously a few years up until recently, the feedback I received almost exclusively was that my prose was atrocious. Which it was. And I didn't really understand how far I had to climb to become at the very least readable. It gets quite disheartening to move along a path which has no visible end.I've had a few dark points where it felt like I was spinning my wheels trying to reach for something I couldn't see and didn't know how to quantify. It was often those bits of writing were the worst, not because of skill regression but because I got in my head and didn't focus on what I was doing. I save a lot of my critiques and criticism as a tool to measure my progression as a writer. It's not that I can't see it for myself, there are plenty of ways I could pick apart my old writing. But apples-to-apples is the best way to measure. Once I started looking back, it became clear where I was and how much closer to my goal I'd become, which alleviated much of the tension while writing and I was able to get out of my own way.

I wrote 7 novels. 8 if you include a total rewrite. 3 fantasy, 4 sci-fi. My experimentation with serialization was a mixed bag. People really enjoyed my style of writing but my story composition was awful because I didn't go in with a plan. Ultimately, despite failure writing serials was a net plus to learn what works and what doesn't regarding developmental organization. I have a new novel in progress, the first for 2024 and am experimenting with writing for games.
