"Carbon tunnel vision" coined by Jan Konietzko is an excellent term to describe a mindset I encounter all the time.Climate change is a huge problem, but intimately linked to so many other problems.https://www.insnet.org/carbon-tunnel-vision-or-inter-connected-response/

@kev I'm very sorry to ask about the exact thing you said not to, but this is really interesting to me. By "conspiracy theory" do you mean you think planned obsolescence:a) does not exist,b) is not something Apple does, orc) does not (yet) affect your phone?Again, sorry to ask and don't want to debate anything, but just haven't seen "conspiracy theory" together with planned obsolescence, and would like to know more.

Nature Sustainability published 2 consistent papers recently on carbon emissions. They show the wealthiest 10% are responsible for about 47% of emissions, where the poorest 50% of only 11%, and the top 1% of 16%.To blame "humanity" is a gross injustice.#ClimateJustice

My wife hit a bug reported in August with a new #Pixel where Do Not Disturb still plays notification sounds. Only way to silence it is to manually mute the combined notification/ringtone volume, which in practice means she's accidentally radio silenced half the time. She says her 2018 mid range phone is vastly superior to a 2022 flagship 95% of the time. How bad can things be at #Google when "DND still disturbs" is a) not caught by regression tests and b) takes months to fix?#BigTech

Also: constant touch screen glitches, consistent with hundreds of other reports. This is ofc inevitable. To increase shareholder value, sales need to grow. To pump up sales, marketing needs new features. And piling useless features on top old useless features, leads to regressions in useful features. Then the corrupt tech press complies with 5 star reviews hiding the obvious rot, because they need to be on good terms with the monopolists.I.e. capitalism working as intended.

@sj_zero wrt agriculture: your material determinism is outdated. Graeber and Wengrow lay out many counter-examples to your claims in The Dawn of Everything.Wrt "individuals will always crave advantage over others": again, you induce from cherry-picked examples a universal, but ignore periods and societies that do not have that craving.Wrt ecological disasters: many known societies have lived in harmony with nature. There's no unstoppable historical force that denies political imagination.

@sj_zero wrt "go be with people for a while"A disingenuous quip, but I'll bite. Most people around me don't crave an advantage of any kind. They are loving, caring people who put the wellbeing of others at the same level as their own. Also: neoliberal ideology ingrains competition into us. In cultures where competition isn't taught, people have a very different outlook life.Determining the potential of humanity only from how people next to you act, is blinding.

@Hyolobrika @sj_zero I am not an expert in anthropology or archeology at all, but The Dawn of Everything lists many examples of (pre)historic cultures of even thousands of people with very little signs of hierarchy, and thus no signs that seeking an advantage over others is core.P.s. As said in sibling comment, char limit removed nuances. Obv I meant cultures that don't reward and/or punish craving for advantages, not ones where no one has such wants.

@sj_zero If only people like you had the courage to snap out of lazy cynicism, everything would be so much better. Right?p.s. I am not advocating for oligarchy of any kind, just plain old democracy. So no, I don't dream of people like me being in charge of anything.

@midway @sj_zero Indeed, what happened in the name communism in the totalitarian oligarchies with growth economies of the 20th century was a complete failure. As said, it's clear that we need new social inventions, the name really doesn't matter. And I agree that the goal should be a pluriverse of different models. What's clear to me though is that the completely groundless dichotomy of "capitalism or Stalin" needs to be rejected.

@jaoler Toinen ongelma voi olla ettet näe vastauksia seuraamasi ihmisten tootteihin. #Doomerism is both an easy and effective way to resolve the cognitive dissonance related to how you benefit from the destruction of nature. When you get yourself to believe there is no way to prevent a complete ecological breakdown, you effectively get a carte blanche to not change anything. If you still get doubts, you can add mental fortification by believing in a hobbesian war of all against all, and reject all hope of cooperation between people. It's one hell of a drug.

I've found the best way to try to break through doomers' defenses is to first point out that, according to current science, a runaway hot house is very unlikely. That means every little bit of less destruction is better. Every person saved and every extinction prevented is worth all our effort. After that (because doomers are in so many cases men), you can try to appeal to their heroic imagination: saving the planet is our generation's big fight. History demands we step up.

@gwensnyderTo those hopeful that #BlueSky is the answer, Jack Dorsey in full agreement with Musk's plan to remove blocking is crucial to know.Jumping from one billionaire's playground to another is not the way – especially when the two billionaires are good chums.

November has been rough for me. Terrible international news, stress at work and almost no sunlight in Helsinki has been a lot handle. Then I got ill but tried to get back to work too early, and it was all too much.I've now had to block all news and social media from Thu to Sun with the great Freedom.to app (the only SaaS I pay for). It has helped, and I've for example read a lot of fiction again.Unfortunately, it means less time on Mastodon. But I'm still here!P.s. Hello new followers!

"Climate advocacy has not failed, climate policy has been sabotaged."It's easy to think that what's stopping meaningful #ClimateAction is ignorance or selfishness of people. But that's just not true anymore: the overwhelming majority of people want to stop the #ClimateCrisis. The problem is active sabotage of democracy by #BigOil, corporations, far right and elites.100+ scholars contributed to bring together this important book in time for #COP30, read it!https://cssn.org/news-research/global-assessment/

@aral Also 🤦to: "We must substantially reduce bureaucracy in Europe. The single market was once created to form the most competitive economic area in the world.Instead, we have become the world champion of overregulation. That has to end."Hadn't realized how far right economically Germany had slipped.
