I feel like I would be best served right now by either taking up Go or Rust and that's a heck of a decision considering both are steered by major corporate interests and both are now embedded in really important things.

@Azure I've done that historically but I'm finding about a 50/50 split in projects I want to work on and promote that are in either language and it's annoyed vee enough to just learn one. Maybe both, but not at once.

Thinking a lot today about how Twitter's use-case as a global soapbox was actually an accidental emergent model. Its original purpose was to get your friends in a circle and post what you were doing like a status message so people could check easily what's going on in their groups.Masto's original use-case was "To be a less awful Twitter" and everything we have now is by design-- which somehow makes it all worse.

Every time you want to reply-guy someone frustrated at the state of for-profit userland software with "USE FOSS", go PR a doco or usability bug or write a tutorial first."Buy a box with Pop_OS! pre-installed" isn't an option for a lot of people when those are twice as expensive as crapware-subsidized OEM, either. We need to urgently be filing the burrs off the Windows->FOSS conversion and usability process.

There's... an entire... musical language... in Tunic.The sound effects and music are all textual data encoded into chords.It's everywhere, and a lot of the sounds are very short, and frequently fairly hilarious, jokes.When you finish a game in speedrun mode, the tone says "time!". When a probe spots you, its robotic gibbering says "No Foxes". One thing the Tunic dev talks about in that spoiler-heavy thread is their mantra in dev of "Mechanics for nobody". They deliberately put stuff in the game they didn't think anyone would ever find because putting it in gave them joy.A lot of it got found anyway because you can never accurately guess the fuzzing capability of thousands of players all trying weird stuff for months.But more importantly, being able to just go "I'm burned out on this boss's AI, I'm going to go code a secret into the dot pattern on this macguffin's underside" or something is a really good way to personalize a project and keep it from becoming a death march.

For the love of...If someone asks someone a question in a medium with notification pings, and explicitly does not ping them, don't hecking immeidately ping them with "^" yourself.I did what I did for a reason.

Honestly... I think the at-mention model of stuff in slack and discord et al is a giant antipattern and I hate it.It used to be you could mention people by name and if the way that sparked notifications bothered the recipient they could change it. I personally had a pretty complicated series of rules that decided when I got notified and when I didn't on IRC.But now it's just "Notifications: On or Off" and that's largely billed as a usability feature because the speaker knows unless you've completely squashed notifications that if they type this magic invocation, you're getting the notification.The sender should not have deciding power on your notification state.

Waiting for the moment shitty media rags start embedding fedi posts like they do with tweets and those rags learn first hand that you can't do that when the author owns the server you're embedding.They'll likely just do screenshots or copy-overs with CSS to make them look like embeds, though.

@hierarchon That's about minimum wage in both places I've lived as an adult.I have some massive, massive disagreements with what the guy's built and his approach and about how he shoulda divested m.s's userbase about 4 years ago, but he's put a ton of hours into building a thing that, when you get down to it, popularized fedi.

This is my first election in WA state and one thing I'm just over the moon about is there's no exit polls, no UP TO THE MINUTE PREDICTIONS, no people trying to manipulate results with polls stating it's already over one way or the other.There's no polls. Everything is done either by mail, or you have a week-long window to bring a sealed ballot in person to a drop location.The media can't sit outside a collection of about 50 locations for one 12 hour period and harangue people as they leave to get a poll.We won't know results for days and by then it'll be too late to try to change anything with manipulation.This opens the door to other problems, but I think this is the better way over all.

Uggggh. I was looking into how to make Nextcloud stop harassing me to generate 2FA backup codes because I have shell access and if I lose my TOTP provider I have remedies that aren’t giving an attacker a 1000% chance increase to hit my TOTP code(s).The discussion on it gives vee a headache.“It’s recommended you generate codes so you can recover your account! Don’t count on your admin saving you!”At least there’s an option, albeit a bad one.

The internet archive did a foundation/corporation/brand/etc landing on the fediverse right.They set up their own instance right from the moment they decided they wanted to do it. Their employees are on it and when they post therein they are speaking officially.Anyone who doesn't want it can zorch the entire instance. Done. Clean. They're not using community resources on an instance some individual is running off donations.
