By way of #introduction, I am professor of #DigitalHumanities at the University of #Lausanne (#UNIL), #Switzerland.I studied #ComputationalLinguistics and did a PhD in #ComputerScience on #ELearning. But these days my main research interest is #theory, #methodology and #epistemology of digital humanities.Current research project (funded by @snsf_ch): Towards Computational Historiographical Modeling: Corpora and Concepts (http://dynalabs.de/mxp/research/2021-snsf)

@freemo Thanks for the friendly welcome!Speaking of #NLProc, I published a book on Natural Language Processing for Historical Texts back in 2012, when I worked for the Swiss Law Sources Foundation.

@freemo It’s in need of an update, tho. Shortly afterwards, machine learning changed everything. #OCR and even #HTR of historical texts are almost “solved problems” today.

@freemo @khird @trinsec I understand it as an elaboration of the statement in the preceding paragraph; as such it may be useful for clarifying what it means.Thank you for your work!

It just occurred to me that instead of buying a radiator I could have brought my HP 9000 C200 #workstation. It probably heats just as well… (Downside: it’s loud, like, really loud.)

@skanman The PA-8200 processor was code-named “Vulcan.” Very fitting!

@skanman I think it’s only one of the address buses that was only 40 bits wide. But I’m no expert either ;-)

@skanman Thanks :-) Wikipedia says on the PA-8000 (which also applies to the PA-8200): “The external interface is the Runway bus, a 64-bit address and data multiplexed bus. The PA-8000 uses a 40-bit physical address, thus it is able to address 1 TB of physical memory.”HP 9000 (later branded “Visualize”) workstations were designed to run HP-UX. The C200 can run either version 10.20 (32 bit) or 11.x (64 bit). Good overview: https://www.openpa.net/systems/hp-visualize_c200_c240_c360.html.

Not sure why the author of the latter felt the need to use words like “Internet mob” and “inquisition.” Conclusion: “The Swiss National Fund has meanwhile announced an investigation, as has the University of Zurich. The results are still be weeks away. By then, the network will have long since pronounced its verdict.”

The latest article on #RECEPTIOgate in the NZZ is now much more critical than the first one; the incoherencies are clearly too important to overlook.https://www.nzz.ch/zuerich/universitaet-zuerich-neue-details-in-affaere-um-plagiatsvorwuerfe-ld.1719614

Many universities are forcing students and instructors to use #Microsoft products—and will thus deploy #AI assistants on a massive scale. You probably won’t be able to turn off these functions even if you wanted to.https://www.theverge.com/2023/2/10/23593980/microsoft-bing-chatgpt-ai-teams-outlook-integration
