This is a great post by one of the #Fosstodon admins. Disregard it being about Fosstodon (!) - it highlights something that I feel is critically important for our decentralized times:*** When you host things _for others_ you are taking on a _job_ - with responsibilities - for the foreseeable future ***Do not do this if you don't fully understand and accept the implications. Many of us are quite technical and can easily stand up various services - but that's not the same thing as saying that we _should_!My first service that I hosted for others was a Fidonet node. It took me close to 30 years to realize that i shouldn't, outside of the immediate family. We need more _small_ Mastodon (Fediverse) instances. Many more. Tens of thousands. #SelfHostinghttps://mikestone.me/2025-04-28-do-what-you-love

@fsf Clarification for those that only read popular headlines. The EU Radio Lockdown Directive does not in any way specify that hardware makers should lock down their bootloaders. On the contrary, it specifically points out it should not be used as an excuse to do just that. The baseband (radio) part of a mobile phone is protected by other means than the bootloader for the general OS, and has so been for many years.

@stux Make sure you're not just falling into the trap Douglas Adams described:https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/39828-i-ve-come-up-with-a-set-of-rules-that-describe

@bagder There will always be security vulnerabilities in code until we go to using formally correct proofs. And that won't happen because that will make development slower and more expensive and ... yeah.

Doug Little (dml) har just released a working build of "Minecraft"* for the 1992 Atari Falcon computer. You'll need 14MB RAM and an FPU, but if you have those you can run it on the real hardware from back in the day!Image from the user DrTypo who already has tried it:https://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?p=487009#p487009*) Playable/buildable engine, not the full game#Atari #AtariFalcon #Minecraft

@philip I'm libertarian - in the original sense. Not the modern tech-bro fascist-lover idiocracy.I've always produced public domain / open source since my teenage years (end 80s). I simply don't _want_ to impose restrictions on you. Please don't start labeling everything you like as "left" and the rest as "right". The scale of authoritarian<->libertarian is orthonogal to left-right.

@Mer__edith Agree - if you want to run your service centralized. Neither my Mastodon nor my Matrix-server need anything but my own self-hosting. Of course they won't handle billions of concurrent customers - but a few tens of thousands similar to mine will. Together. I simply don't think Signal being centralized is a good thing. It's your choice, but alternatives do exist and those do not need hyperscalers.

@Mer__edith Thanks for your condescending reply. I used to manage global SaaS within fintech with nodes in GCP, AWS and Azure and on multiple different continents.

Day two of relearning how to use a keyboard (a.k.a moving to a split keyboard). After lots of configuration I'm reasonably happy with the setup and I'm beginning to mostly, slowly, hit the intended keys on the first try.I've been touch typing for easily 35 years, with the wrong hand position and no clear separation of hand duty so this is one of the more difficult things I've ever done. This toot probably took 5 minutes to write.

I specifically went out of my way to purchase a European-built keyboard btw, if you wonder why it's not "brand name". Beautiful birch, blank keycaps. Happy so far.

Volkswagens's cloud service VW Connect has interesting properties. It's used for the communication between the mobile app and the car, and thanks to reverse engineering also by other integrations like Home-Assistant.A week ago ours stopped working, both for those third party integrations as well as VW's own app. After having researched whether the problem was on my side or not I decided to wait out this temporary outage. After two days I wondered why nothing happened. After all, this should be a somewhat big deal, since it meant you couldn't start window defrosting remotely and other obvious winter needs. I looked around on the web and found that this ... just happens, sometimes, and it's "per car" - not the whole service in itself. And it's been doing this for years.recap: VW's cloud service suddenly stops working randomly for individual cars every now and then - for multiple days - and then starts working again.Because yes, last evening my integrations started showing updated information, and we've done absolutely nothing different from any other day.I wonder if the VW developers even know about this. I'd love to hear the technical details behind it!#vw #vwconnect
