@kzimmermann I have a decommissioned Dell from some business that just has a dual-core CPU and a couple of gigs of RAM.It's set up with Proxmox (for some flexibility and so that I can remotely access the GUI, it's otherwise headless), and it runs data capture for my radio telescope. (Or did when I had a dongle for it, but I'll have another one waiting for me when I get home).Very low power, very old, but can do cool stuff.

@pyre35 This is why I'm looking at alternatives to the current set of ecosystems and am kind of looking at the PinePhone Pro when it comes out despite the software limitations.Because Google, Apple, and other device manufacturers have the ability - and have shown a willingness to - change the operation of the device in an update ; and there's no reason they couldn't, if they wanted to, disable the device completely if I didn't agree to terms or whatever. And I want to control my device.

@kzimmermann This is actually how I got into FOSS in the first place. My family was fairly poor and our computer - in the early 2000s - was an AST system with CGA graphics and an 80286 in it. My first real experience with a GUI system at home was when a friend gave me an otherwise junker PC that I can't remember the specs to, but it ran Mandrake Linux and it was amazing. I'd been hooked ever since.

@pyre35 I'd considered the same at one point. Dumbphone of some sort, WiFi Hotspot, and maybe a Raspberry Pi built into a tablet or some other open-ish device that could use Internet over WiFi.

@urusan It depends on what the review is for. If I'm reviewing a service employee, it's 5/5 unless they screwed up massively, because businesses have collectively decided that anything less than a 5 is bad and people are actually punished for it.Device reviews though, 5 is above and beyond/well exceeds expectations.

@urusan Blankets. Warm clothing. E-Tip gloves (so you can use smart devices like phones without freezing your hands). Battery banks for said phones. Offline content for phones. Books. Entertainment/recreation is overlooked a lot in emergency supplies.Have a plan to winterize the residence, too, to minimize heat loss. Weather striping, maybe cover windows. Note: This would make fumes build up from indoor gas-powered heaters. Be *very* cautious using those.

@pyre35 I believe the rtl8821ce package installs a kernel module. It's possible that it might remain after uninstalling the package, perhaps?Additionally, if secure boot is blocking bluetooth from working perhaps it needs to be signed.

There's something especially nerdy about chilling out on a bus with some Synthwave while interneting on what's basically a modern PDA.

@LinuxLounge Hardware, perhaps? Not "unboxing and review" but like, how stuff physically works on a low level.

@urusan I kind of lean towards "No" because of how early Kerbal Space Program was. There were a lot of breaking changes to save files and no real ability to convert them... so I'd spend a bunch of time trying to set up space infrastructure only to have that erased. Start over. Erased again. Etc.I still can't do megaprojects in KSP because even though I know it's irrational, I'm worried the work will vanish again.

@urusan I have two GPUs with a decent amount of video RAM and I want to do AI stuff that can use that much RAM but they don't support multi GPU stuff so I have to buy new ones. Also, I have enough system memory to do the AI stuff with CPU computation but you can't use the system memory to do bottlenecked GPU computation even though you can use it on the CPU :(

@LinuxLounge "Still"Long support for the LTS releases and it's not worth it for me to just nuke my entire environment and reinstall everything. If I had to I might investigate Debian for servers and stuff because it's a solid OS... but swapping everything over is a non-trivial time investment when I don't have tons of time in the first place. When I do have to rebuild it, I'll probably use something else. What depends on when, though.
