@futurebird when I was younger I'd parrot this complaint but then I remembered the few times I was given real world advice as a teenager I simply lacked the real world experience to actually comprehend it, and I didn't truly understand the value of money until I lived on my own actually budgeting my own money to my own competing expenses. For an example, in middle school I remember an assignment where they had us put down what we think various normal expenses cost like rent, water, electricity, and groceries. I don't remember what the point of the assignment was just the teachers laughing about how we had nearly zero idea of what anything actually cost and assigned high amounts to forgettable bills and low amounts to the most painful ones. I think it might have been a budgeting assignment? I honestly don't remember. But what I do remember is as kids who didn't have actual financial obligations we had no clue what anything cost so giving financial advice was kinda meaningless

@futurebird I grew up living adjacent to a poor neighborhood and got to see this firsthand. In elementary school my homeless classmates would show up by city-subsidized taxi. I had classmates who had to have their heads shaved by the school nurse because they couldn't shower enough to get rid of the head lice they'd picked up. In middle school I had a classmate fall asleep standing up because they spent the entire night moving apartments. I witnessed students getting arrested and even saw an officer use excessive force slamming a handcuffed kid into a wall for mouthing off. When these are the things going on in one's life how could a kid care about synonyms and antonyms or the historical allegories in Animal Farm or any other school subject for that matter

@stux because the present has a nasty habit of echoing the past, in the 1930s there was quite a bit of support for the Nazis in the US. Notably including Henry Ford and other business leaders. Fortunately that time around better judgement prevailed and Nazi butts were kicked. I'm hopeful that the same will happen this time around, but with less war and genocide required

@futurebird as someone who enjoys watching Big Clive tear down and reverse engineer terrible and dangerous electronics, I would be all over this, plus my oldest is getting close to electronics kid age (although let's be real, I wanna do some electronics kits too!)

@stux my cats consistently go "ooh a box what fun!" to the cat carrier and don't realize their mistake until several second after I've locked the door

@futurebird my five year old will narrate the videos she's pretending to record while playing computer games, sometimes asking "chat" questions. I swear she doesn't get more than a couple hours a week of YouTube content yet she still picked up these new language trends caused entirely by changes in media consumption.Almost makes me wonder if these will become magical incantations that few can remember the purpose of, like saying "bless you" after sneezing, someone will make an embarrassing mistake then say to nobody in particular "chat, am I cooked?"

@ricci this is why my medium term goal is to setup a separate homelab environment and homeprod environment... Homelabbing really is taking the problems from work home with you

@ricci honestly, my intention is to have the lab systems be older and cheaper systems that spend some amount of time powered off, while the production systems are more energy efficiency optimized and right-sized for the workload. Seems to be the right balance between cost and performance

@ricci oh that absolutely ups the complexity a lot! I've just got a pallet of old office PCs from an auction I didn't expect to win. Right now I just have one running 24/7 as a proxmox host and storage pool, I might eventually turn it into a cluster, I might not. I kinda want to get one of those 2u4node or a pair of 2u2node supermicro systems (probably x99/DDR4 era for cost reasons) for my lab servers, since there's some fun cluster stuff I want to mess around with and physical cabling makes that much easier. Plus they support more than the 32GB of RAM that my hoard of cheap ewaste PCs support

@Nonilex I lost my job without warning about 2.5 months ago. I've been applying to every single job in my industry that I'm qualified for that's been posted within a 70 mile radius and I've had a single interview so far. Some weeks I've not been able to find any new jobs to apply for! This job market *sucks*Fortunately one of my old workplaces brought me back part time as a contractor and they've been handing me more and more work so I've been ramping up my hours there over the past two months and I'm finally up to an amount of hours where I can coast for a while and maybe actually splurge some too. No benefits and I'll be the first to go if they decide that they need to shed labor again, but it could be a lot worse!

@futurebird So my anecdata to add as someone smack dab in the middle of the age range you stated with both older and younger friends who also fall in that range:For my wife and I's friends, almost all are unmarried, and the friends who are married seem to be going strong. The few people I know who are divorced had extremely toxic relationships that needed to end. So it seems people are focusing on healthier relationships above all else romantically.I have observed people generally are really insulated and not going out and spending time with others. Even the middle school and high school in town at release time have next to nobody walking or biking home, and everyone's driving cars, and very few people are hanging out in public afterwards. My friends are slow to schedule get togethers but we chat regularly digitally. I think everyone having computers to communicate on and provide constant dopamine drips and entertainment is making its effect on society right now and research is starting to show it.

@raccoon my crappy printer bit the dust but theoretically we're moving soon so I've been putting off getting a new one. We've been talking about moving for over 2 years now so I should probably just bite the bullet and get one but ehhhhhh. The library is just a 5 minute bike ride away and only charges like 10ยข to print anything I do need printed

@detondev it's honestly impressive how much everything the current administration has done is depressing the economy. It's almost more impressive that it's taking so long to fully swing into a recession though with all of the downward pressures on economic growth that they're pushing.I've been actively job hunting for about 4 months now. Literally checking every week for new jobs to apply for and applying for everything I'm qualified for in a 50 mile radius. A few have even come back and said they decided not to fill the position at all! I've been able to get 3 interviews in the last 4 months and so far no job offers. 2 years ago when I was told my tenure would end in 30 days I only had to file 6 job applications, got 3 interviews and 2 job offers before that 30 days was up! It's incredible how quickly these things can change!

@Nonilex he was also involved in a massive scandal with tons of baseless accusations up and down the chain of command over what ultimately turned out to be a simple error in TV control because a scene of a movie containing nudity played on a TV during a school board meeting and instead of simply turning it off everyone had to point fingersRyan Walters part: https://arstechnica.com/security/2025/07/blame-the-governor-oklahomas-board-meeting-porn-scandal-goes-gonzo/The eventual resolution: https://arstechnica.com/culture/2025/09/oklahomas-big-tv-nudes-scandal-was-a-jackie-chan-movie-on-a-samsung-streaming-service/

@davidrevoy a friend of a friend is a student at Cornell and going through exactly this right now (and working on transferring out of their dream college) they shared a document where the administration defended their AI policies and in the defense cite "AI Copilot" output as their source. I'm kinda disappointed I'm not seeing some malicious compliance source checking where they apply the same battery of checking sources one would to citations of obscure books for made up Wikipedia edits. Would an AI model be a primary or secondary source?

@futurebird @crankylinuxuser I never realized how simultaneously meaningless and meaningful sunset was until I started doing evening bike rides for a year. Sunrise and sunset are a process that lasts about an hour at each end of the day, and every minute of that time has its own unique qualities as the world transitions between night and day. Its really magical to experience regularly and our modern built lives don't expose us to enough of nature's magic like that
