Smaller might be easier, down to a point - we like to start at roughly 24px square.If you go small enough, you hit a point where it's less like drawing and more like building things in Minecraft. I think that tipping point is probably somewhere around 48px for us.If you find you need more resolution, you can just make your canvas bigger, so don't stress about the initial size!#PixelArt

Software-wise, we like Krita! It's better known for regular drawing/painting, and it excels at that, but it excels at pixel art too.https://krita.orgYou'll probably find the Pixel brush most helpful here, naturally. Other brushes aren't really gonna be of much use.

The really cool thing about pixel art is that if something looks off, you can just /sculpt/ it, adding/removing pixels as needed!And you'll probably be doing a lot of that. That's normal. That's how you get good art, you start with mediocre or even bad art and shape it until it looks right.Krita's erase is built into the brush tool. Just hit E. Also Q is the multibrush tool, good for mirroring.

Trust your instincts on whether something looks proportioned wrong or not. Especially if you're an animal, drawing the kind of animal that you are (*raises paw*) – you probably have a foreleg up on the humans here, eye-for-proportions wise.Also references. References help IMMENSELY. Grab a photo of your species and draw them in pixels!

I'd recommend starting with a headshot avatar, drawn from a photo reference - it's way easier to get the proportions right than it is on a fullbody. We still haven't figured out legs.

For instance, here's my old picture (the photo) along with my new picture, which I used the photo as a reference for.As you can see, they're not quite identical. But the photo still gave me a thing to, well, refer back to, to make sure I had the proportions roughly right, the colors correct, and whatnot.

Don't try to do a 3/4 view, at least when starting out. There's a reason we pretty much only do front and side; they're WAY easier!References help, but still.

Oh! Angled lines!You can obviously make angled lines that are e.g. 1px down and 1px right, 1px down and 2px right, etc. But what if you need to go between those?Well, you can alternate, say 2+1, or 3+2! This is of course slightly janky if you zoom in, but there's not a whole lot you can do to avoid that at these small sizes, and people won't notice when they're zoomed out. It'll look fine. Also quotes. We put the punctuation where it logically goes, not Always Inside.Period outside the quotation? It goes outside the quotation.
