Toot! v21.0 has been released!https://toot.to/This version adds a few of the last remaining Mastodon 4.0 features that were still missing: Following hashtags and server-driven translation. If your server supports translation, you can now use it quickly and easily from Toot! as well. There are also a few bugfixes for scrolling. The scroll-back-to-previous feature is now disabled by default because some found it disorienting, but can be turned on in the settings.

This version is rolling out as a phased release over a week. The full release notes are:* You can now follow hashtags. Followed hashtags will show up in your home timeline.* If your server supports it, you can now translate posts with one tap! You can also adjust what language to translate into.

If you liked it, turn it on in the settings!* The scroll back feature also works slightly better.* Fixed a crash during timeline position syncing.* Possible fix for a bug with scrolling to top.

Also, now that I am asking about notifications, I suddenly wondered if it would make sense for admins if admin report notifications were marked as time-sensitive so they are given more prominence on the lock screen?

One thing that many people have requested is notification icon badges for Toot!. The main reason they have not been implemented is that I've always found the use of notification badges a very toxic pattern to drive addictive behaviour on social media apps, always trying to nudge you back to opening the app.

I was thinking, though, that this mainly applies to things like favourites and other things that you don't REALLY need to know right now. So I was thinking enabling them for mentions only (and maybe some other things that require immediate attention like admin report notifications) might make sense. What do you think?

@ocean I think having a badge for stuff like getting a new favourite just doesn't make sense, and the only reason apps like Twitter do it is to drive you to open the app more. There's just no situation where that is important enough that you would want to be informed that forcefully about it, and giving users an option where one choice is always wrong is not good design.

Here's an early sneak peek of what I've been working on lately. I think I've managed to at least figure out how to fix all the major problems I can predict with this, so it *should* just be a matter of doing all the work to get this fully functional.

Sorry, the notifications certificate expired, so notifications stopped working. You'd think I'd learn that it does this every year but nope.Should be back up and running now, it might be working through a bit of a backlog at the moment but hopefully it will be back in shape soon.

Hello! It's been a good while since I posted anything here, but it is finally time for a bit of a status update.I haven't been doing many updates for a while now for two reasons:1. Toot! is mainly developed as a client that does what I personally want, and I haven't wanted much lately.2. I did have some good ideas I did want to try, but they fizzled out for reasons to be explained later.HOWEVER!There are now things I will be wanting!

Quote toots are huge, and I will be wanting to use those, so that will require some work. And iOS 26 is coming very soon, and it will mess up everything about the UI, so some major changes will have to happen.I am working on both of those at the moment. Can't give a definite timeline yet of when it will be done because it turns out it's a lot of work. But at some point in the nearish future, I hope to get a beta out for people to start testing.

Beta testing for Toot 26 is now open!https://testflight.apple.com/join/FHupDY6vThis version is planned to have two major things: A UI overhaul for iOS 26 (with some changes carrying back to iOS versions), and support for quote toots. This beta build has only the first part, the quote toots are not yet implemented.The UI changes are also not 100% done, and it has tons and tons of internal changes that can lead to fresh new bugs. So it needs lots of testing, both on new and old iOS, and iPhone and iPad!
