@henryk @futurebird Yeah that’s true. The first few times use training wheels in the form of an independent tax software, which explains in plain language what that approximately means. After doing that a few years, I had enough self confidence to get by without it and be sure enough I won’t land in jail. What you need to teach is the ability for problem solving and becoming confident in your skills. Not an easy job, but much more useful than tax code.

@futurebird “The pensions are safe” has been a meme in Germany since about the same time I became aware that I will need to live off pensions and savings one day. I never really believed in it and for multiple reasons my savings are much lower than they should be.These days, a fascist takeover seems about as likely as being able to retire with healthy financials.

@foone Is that because DOS 3.0 and later have a larger memory footprint?

@riley “The IQ test doesn’t test intelligence, it tests how well you do in an IQ test” is still one of the most underrated tautologies. I think my psychology professor was the first person who I’ve heard it from.

@futurebird Even here in Germany, where the cops are usually not quite as trigger-happy, I’d never assume someone did anything wrong if they come out of a police interaction with injuries or if they get arrested. Especially if it happened at some kind of protest, but even in a “routine” control or something. I’ve seen cops unnecessarily escalating the situation more often than keeping their calm.At one big event ten years ago toilet brushes became a meme, because cops had classified one someone had sticking out their backpack as a dangerous weapon and a reason to pull him out violently.

@futurebird Thank you. I use the kettle (without the lid) to evaporate water in winter, for some humidity.

@futurebird @ephesossh There’s also some state government threatening things(?), which made them change some rules. Not really anything new going on, just back in the news.Imo it’s the same story that’s been around since the internet has been around. Yes, there are predators in spaces where children are. Parents and schools need to talk to their children, so they know how to deal with the situation. They probably won’t ever meet one of the predators.I’m 43 and I remember being warned against predators on IRC and other chat rooms.

@futurebird It’s never about crime and safety. Here in Germany the current hype is knives. More and more cities start declaring "knife free zones".Some even admit that "of course we can’t stop someone from stabbing people with this, but we can give police a reason to do 'random' searches."

@futurebird @micahflee In my experience, talking back and forth with the users during development is the actual fun part of software development…I don’t get those “hack something together alone in a room” people.

@futurebird C-suite always promotes that AI will make us more efficient and everyone should be “empowered” to use it. I have no interest, and I’m not (yet) forced to do training or anything. I do sometimes watch presentations, so I can make fun of how bad it is later.

@futurebird I know an advertising person and I do a lot to avoid the topic when we meet. We could have been better friends, if she worked in a less predatory creative industry. At one point she told my friends, she was convinced I was jealous because she made more money than me? Nope, I just don’t like what she does.I once talked to her about how fucked up targeted advertising is, and that it probably doesn’t really work better than the old method of advertising in spaces related to your product. She didn’t see the problem.Well, most tech people don’t see the problems in the tech industry either. Which is more annoying to me, because that’s who I have to work with daily. :neocat_laugh_sweat:

@futurebird I remember a few years ago professors complaining that their students "don’t even know what a directory is anymore."Yeah, then, teach them that? If they mostly interacted with operating systems that hid file and directory structures from them, you can’t expect them to magically know those things. When I started studying in 2002, one professor showed us how to find his website from the university‘s homepage. Because that was a relatively new skill. Now you need to show people how to find a file, when they aren’t indexed and shown per app. What’s the difference?

@futurebird Hmm… For the three definitions of “mileage” in en.wikipedia.org, in German:Distance traveled in the life time of a car: Tachostand (tachograph status).Distance traveled from a point: Zurückgelegte Strecke (traveled distance).Fuel economy: Spritverbrauch (fuel usage), measured in litre/100km.Business mileage reimbursement rate: No such thing, afaik.

@futurebird @chessert Also unrelated: I remember in my childhood (80s to early 90s), low flying exercises above our village in Germany all the time. No sonic booms, but very loud jet engines from fighter jets, training for the cold war going hot.Now I live near Ramstein, and I can tell when the US does military action, by the amount of transport planes going past my window.
