Hello world! The logical end-point of distribution and federation is a personal instance. This is my Mastodon instance. (Originally hosted on m.tzyl.nl since Oct 2018)

@wjmaggos @tchambers @kraft yes! It would enable a large chunk of the open web to federate. I am particularly interested in using it to share unlisted posts of specific categories with closed follower groups. To e.g. share travel plans with my network like Dopplr of old .

@nicole I do something similar with a tag for the date in the form of #yyyy/mm/dd for notes I 'touch' during the day, and I have a dataview of notes created in the daily note itself.

@nicole cool, now I wonder if you have made one of your videos about making these presentations starting in Obsidian....

@nicole I have a follow-up question after that vid: what do you use to render slides from the advanced slides plugin online at your slides subdomain? And what do you do to export slides to PDF to share with organisers e.g.?

@nicole I see the Github repo of advanced slides says there's an export option, the documentation doesn't mention it though.

@nicole Thanks, will explore. I probably want to figure out how to apply my company's template to slides. Then it would be pretty cool, as I outline my talks in Obsidian anyway.

Everytime I post a link here on #Mastodon to my site it results immediately in a large number of requests made for the previews of all those that get my Mastodon message. That creates a spike in the use of my webserver's resources, leading to error messages. Iow I'm #DDOS -ing myself that way. This I presume gets worse as the number of followers grows. Are there ways to mitigate it?

@tante "Blogs and the web didn't scale to actual web traffic" : what do you mean by that?

@tante Ah, I see what you mean. But that's not a scaling issue per se right, as the need for scale is tied to specific types of asymmetric risk. Those that see that risk as common will plan for higher traffic (cloudflare etc). Those that don't will plan for intermittency more, given how they view their audience. (i've blocked specific URLs in the past that peaked in traffic for a while e.g.). Why would one expect to cover all eventualities?

Behavioural targeting by #Meta is declared illegal, and Meta must cease doing so within 2 weeks. Thank you to the Norwegian DPA for requesting the #EDPB 's binding decision, and to people like Max Schrems at @noybeu for kicking this process off in 2018. https://www.zylstra.org/blog/2023/11/eu-bans-metas-behavioral-targeting-without-freely-given-consent/ #GDPR

#functieelders

@clacke The page for the island of Usedom suggests that while tourism was important 1945-1990 it took place in the context of all facilities being run from off-island VEBs and with many military facilities on the island. Likely meaning whoever was allowed to stay there was tightly controlled? With no 'celebs' from anywhere. And probably also means an absence of statistics.

@aral seems like a good minimum annual target then for EC fines for Meta.

Are you into #opensource ? And in the #eu ?There is a Call for Feedback by the European Commission for a 'European Open Digital Ecosystem Strategy' For strategic approach to #foss in Europe, and a framework for using open source within the European Commission. You can respond until 3 February. It is useful to respond even if your point has already been submitted by someone else. @hetzner It would be great if Hetzner et al would way more actively make themselves visible wrt how / what you can bring to the table as alternatives and reach out to e.g. public sector entities, take part in public procurement etc. EU cloud hosters seem to mostly shrug "we can't help it they're not buying cloud from us". Claim your space. Get out there!
