       @icedquinn I fired up pocket-tts the other day and it works pretty close to real-time on only a CPU (my GPU isn't supported). So if you don't have a huge amount of traffic that could be an option for self-hosting. Also does voice cloning if you don't like the 6 that ship with it out of the box.

       @icedquinn Yeah. I used espeak for giving me voice alerts of sms messages. But it sounds too robotic and the phoneme translation is pretty bad, especially for anything not already in it's dictionary. That's why the pocket-tts piqued my interest. Actually sounds good, and runs about the same speed on my box. Voice cloning is also a nice plus.I think the GPU market is probably gonna tank since most of the big tech companies are switching to ASICs. Totally apart from improvements in the algorithms.

       @icedquinn I wish I was more savvy with math tbh. It's not my forte, which is kinda annoying since LLMs are basically giant spreadsheets of statistics (what RMS calls PI / Pretend Intelligence). I've created a couple toy models from tutorials and such, but it's probably well past my day or interest to gain any greater skills in the math dept. I have to just satisfy myself with using the APIs that are available using my existing full-stack know-how.

       @icedquinn Maybe. But personally my interests lay more towards outdoor skills like foraging, herbalism and permaculture. I've had my face glued to a screen for the better part of 30 years now, so IT stuff is more of a hobby at this point. Recreational programming, unless someone offers me $.

It's taken over absolutely everywhere here from field to forest floor and is virtually impossible to kill. Apart from literally strangling other plants, it also has allelopathic root exudates which kill the soil microbiome. I kinda figured it's anti-fungal properties might work against athlete's foot, but the root tincture smells like rotting fish and makes valerian root seem pleasant smelling by comparison. So no. At least not in that formulation. It does make reasonable cordage though. And there are sporadically some herbaceous plants that seem to tolerate it like St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum), but really few and far between. Anyway, I'm still not sure how to consider it an ally unless all I want is an abundant monoculture of inedible and medicinally questionable vines.
