@Jackiemauro @incoherentmumblings @futurebird In some cases it's not arrogance, it's just straight dishonesty. Hard to tell here. There are lots of accelerationists who want the "gets worse" part, and they're not all that interested in the "gets better" part.

@futurebird Well, one way to think about it is to consider the liquidity of the company.Company A makes widgets and are reasonably profitable. Most of their cash is tied up in the business of making widgets, paying suppliers, employees, distributors, etc.The current ownership is tired of running a widget company. They want to cash out and move on. So they ask, does anyone want to buy our company?

@futurebird is it because the 'M' can be misread as an 'N', and if you do, it's a very disturbing and altogether possible message.

@futurebird @lienrag less than what? Trump's record in office hardly looks non-interventionist. (He perpetuated the ear on Afghanistan, directly bombed Iran, and increased drone killings while shrouding that program in secrecy)At best, you might argue that Trump's foreign policy was "helter skelter," but underlying that chaos was a real intention to use the power of the presidency to enrich himself.Rank corruption != non-interventionism

@futurebird I doubt it's as subtle as that. I think he went to the Libertarian Party convention because his campaign needs new voters and libertarians (being by-and-large racist and misogynist white men) are a natural fit.Trump's entire life is basically "Emperor's New Clothes" where people allow their expectations to override their perceptions that he's transparently a criminal and a clown because of their expectations. It is the entire subtext of "The Apprentice"

@cstross I wish people understood that in democracies, the parties reflect the people who vote consistently. Not voting is not a "protest."It is acquiescence.Similarly, withholding your support until and unless there's a "perfect" candidate does not stimulate the creation of a perfect candidate. It suppresses good candidates."Vote defensively" is a good way to put it. But I would say, "vote like you're building something."

@futurebird You have some clever students. That's a good question. I would remind your student that power corrupts. And absolute power corrupts absolutely. The answer is "global dictator of the world." A single (infallible) person who could decide who lives and dies in a single-minded effort to curb global CO2.

@dalias @Nazani @javi the current AI wave was *caused* by a glut of coprocessing chips that were produced by Nvidia and purchased by al cloud hosting providers with the plan to sell blockchain/"bitcoin mining as a service" to corporate customers. But that bubble popped and they were left with tremendously expensive servers, specifically useful only for parallel computation, that nobody wanted to use.

@futurebird @Naich imo, the problem with quote boosts is that they steal ownership of the original authors content. If they were implemented here in a way that allowed the original author to remove their content from the quote boost, then it would be fine. I've settled into boost & reply as a perfectly functional workaround.

@futurebird @Naich Yeah, that last is so frustrating. I think it must be a federation thing.Muddled conversation threads is a serious design issue that no one talks about.I'm *eager* for new features and functionality that improves the way we converse. But I don't want to add features that take away ownership from authors.

@futurebird Some of The Youth seem to place a premium on a sort of post-ironic faux sincerity that could be thought of as "deniable plausible deniability."I carry this Zombie Trump head because I like/hate/don't care about Trump. It's cool/terrible/funny that you like/hate/don't care about my Zombie Trump head.Like schrodinger's cat, these states all exist in superposition until something happens that forces them into momentary alignment.

@futurebird @czottmann We decided to stop taking our meds because maybe the voices that only we can hear have our best interest at heart. (Also, our insurance wouldn't cover the prescription anymore)

@futurebird JD Vance's "I Didn't Have Non-Consensual Sex With My Sofa" t-shirt has a lot of people asking questions already answered by his t-shirt.I'd bet that 80-90% of the people watching that show had not heard about the couch thing. Now they have.

@futurebird @WearsHats Trump's vocabulary is severely limited. I think it's a cognitive issue (man, woman, person, camera, tv) and it's only getting worse.Trump can speak 200 words, but he speaks forcefully and without hesitation.Biden can speak 40,000 words but he has a stutter and his voice gets raspy after a while. One of these people is qualified to hold public office.

@futurebird @iquaanyin IANAL, but I believe there's pretty substantial case law already about these "shrinkwrap contracts."In practice, the court's hands are not at all tied and a judge can easily disregard claims of a "binding contract" made based on clicking through a agreement screen.

@futurebird "You know this problem that you have probably never encountered and if you have I am describing it incorrectly? No? Yes? Doesn't matter. I will take care of it. I will take care of it in a way that is perfect for you. Not them. I will stop them. They will be mad. They will say 'You can't do that.' But I will do it. And you will be happy and you will come up to me and say 'Sir. Sir. You saved my child's life.'"Every Trump speech.
