n00b question maybe @stux can answer: I see edited toots from accounts I follow, but I don’t see any way to edit my won – is this a server-specific feature that we don’t have here? or am I just being dense?

@astrodino @stux sounds like it is an experimental feature in the current software release but will be on by default in the next release

@stux Honestly, I’ve been really impressed with how gracefully this instance has handled the tsunami.Kudos!

@stux So, looking at interactions... we basically tripled the load on that poor server in a matter of days.

#TwitterMigration Mastodon culture question: We’re hearing a lot about how ‘favourites’ don’t work like Twitter/FB ‘likes’—and it seems to me that established Mastodon users are sparing with them.My reflex is to use them as a gesture of “I acknowledge what you’re saying and appreciate it even if I don’t have a substantive comment to make”—is that at odds with established community norms?

@reluctant the author of the post gets a notification that you ‘favourited’ it—and AFAICT that’s it

I am properly tickled by the existence of the Hebrew-language Mastodon server tooot.im – ‘tutim’ being Hebrew for ‘strawberries’ and this being their banner image.

Another note for new #TwitterMigration folks like me: social norms here are that we don’t censor names like “Musk.” It shouldn’t be necessary, because full-text search isn’t really a thing and trolls are actually moderated. If content is potentially offensive, put it behind a CW, but don’t “c*nsor” it because this breaks people’s filters (i.e., prevents them from being able to mute words).

inspired by @Richard_Littler’s musing this morning on what happened to the future: we’ve got smartphones and the Internet, which are very cool—but we still waste our lives in traffic jams and people still die because they can’t afford medical careit’s not just the flying cars and moonbases; we really did abandon the idea of making a better world

#Accessibility How do we gently encourage people to use alt text?I’m trying to get in the habit of not boosting posts that have inaccessible images. There are times I want to say “hey, I love this and wanted to boost it, but there’s no alt text”—but I’m not convinced it’s the best approach. If somebody’s response is “eff off, who asked you?” then we haven’t accomplished anything useful. What works best to encourage without being annoying or making folks defensive?
