It is simple - charge the producer of pollution the ultimate costs of such action. If you pollute by whatever means, you pay. If it is too costly then another avenue needs to be explored that offers a viable non polluting product or service. The alternative is a planet our grandchildren cannot live on. The free lunch is over.

The Online News Act has come into effect in Canada. The act demanded that major digital news intermediaries, such as Meta and Google, strike commercial deals with publishers to pay them for their content. Google has agreed to provide the Canadian news industry with $100 million annually, while Meta has banned all news links. However, the act's effectiveness is being questioned, and some are concerned about the impact on small and startup publications.https://thetyee.ca/News/2023/12/19/Online-News-Act-How-We-Got-Here/?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=editorial

Not a big fan of the NY Times but they have some good ongoing features. Subscriber replies to articles are sometimes numerous and pretty good.

@WiseWoman @kim_harding We used to include the sentence "All applications to include a handwritten covering letter" in our employment advertising. Usually 50% of applications had a word processed printed letter. And they wondered why they were never called for an interview.

@CoinOfNote @numismatics Seems like the USA is acting like China and 1989 Tiananmen Square. Erase any evidence of the event.
