Sometimes I watch videos or listen to podcasts about catastrophic, extinction-level or at least civilization-ending events like (allegedly) pole shifts, asteroid impacts, etc., and I think "Wouldn't that be nice?" It's probably not a good place to be, really.

We often see photos of beautiful, intricate sand mandalas created by Buddhist monks. However, what we don't often see are photos of what happens to the mandala after it is finished. Every mandala is methodically destroyed, the sand mingled with water, and dispersed. This is the culmination of the creation of such a work. The 'grand finale' as it were. The summation. Impermanence, but more than that. Meaninglessness is hiding at the heart of every stroke of every artist's pen, and in every pen, and in every artist, beautiful and moving as they all may be.All is chaos. Chaos is all. Listen.

When we are truly listening, we can hear the electrons whirling around our atoms. We can hear the Strong and Weak Nuclear forces holding the nuclei together. We can hear the fluctuations of the quantum foam under everything, and it is then, only then, that oneness is realized. Mathematics, with its formality and rigor, seems like a fundamentally ordered system, and it is. However, when sufficiently studied, one learns of just how many gaping holes there are in that ordered system. For example, you may know that if one throws a dart at the real number line, the probability that the dart lands on a rational number is zero. The overwhelming majority of numbers are irrational, to such an extent that their density in the reals dwarfs that of the rationals.It may surprise you to know that not only are most numbers irrationals... most numbers are also transcendental, meaning that they transcend algebra (they aren't the root of any polynomial). And more than that, most numbers are *indescribable*. The system of mathematics is at the heart of everything we know about the universe, yet it is anchored firmly in the hum of chaos. It's easy to find very charming and charismatic spiritual teachers online who lure in students with a soft voice and an easy smile and the very alluring teaching that the fundamental force at work in the universe is love. These teachers are, by and large, a sham. No fully enlightened being has a YouTube channel. Not one.The fundamental force at work in the universe is not love, it's chaos. This, however, is an easy mistake to make; they taste the same.

I heard about one such teacher who would gather large audiences and one by one, students will approach him and be given a spiritual name. The attendee described the other students as excitedly pulling out their phones to change their Facebook names to their new spiritual names. The delusion at work here could not be more apparent.Spiritual names are meaningless and only serve to bind naïve seekers to spiritual authority.The most important part of my spiritual name is "The Meaningless." They are essentially nonsense, but no more than anything else. No one is more qualified to give you a spiritual name than you are, if you want one.Don't follow instructions.

What can a guru teach you? If you like the idea of God, read "Who Am I?" by Ramana Maharshi If you don't, read the Kybalion. If you can read and understand these two short texts, you have obtained the knowledge that most modern Western gurus can give you, and you've saved yourself a lot of money and time. You're welcome.
