There is plenty of good news in the midterm results. The GOP did very well in California. The two largest blue states, New York and California, are both examples of what works and how to move forward, starting with outstanding candidates and working hard to encourage voters. In Orange County, Republicans voted for Republican Brian Dahle over Newsom by a margin that was 12 points higher than the 2020 Presidential vote

The midterms produced a rising star in Lee Zeldin. These are counties that he flipped red compared to Cuomo in 2018.These are landslides1/2

Zeldin won Staten Island by 33 points. He won Rockland by 12.A couple of weeks ago I posted about his rallies on Long Island and in Westchester. Rockland is next to Westchester. Both counties went blue at the end of the 80s. I mentioned that Zeldin held a rally on my home turf. For the first time since Bush Sr. there is hope for the GOP.2/3

The New York GOP worked hard to make sure that the Dems did not get away with their redistricting scheme. Then they fielded strong candidates who ran with Zeldin. Four seats in New York flipped GOP. Together with DeSantis' redistricting of Florida and the strong showing in CA, those three states together were more than enough to flip the House. The new GOP juggernaut and the two largest blue states in the country.3/4

@BirdDog Good things happening in California for Republicans as well as in New York. That is a lesson for us in Massachusetts

@BirdDog You have Republicans in Congress. We don't have any. Although I know CA is a state where the worst excess of the Democrats make life miserable in many places. We are comparatively sedate in comparison - but only by comparison.

@BirdDog Understood. LA is deep blue, like NYC. I am thinking of the contributions of the CA GOP, and NY as well, to the country. Watching the final state races, many of them slow-walked of course by the Dems when they can, it was clear that the work done by the GOP in both states was making the difference. If the Dems had kept the House we would be in a grim situation. That didn't happen. Massachusetts contributed nothing at all - as usual

@umad80 The quality of candidates is indeed vitally important. Some of the candidates who lost this year were poor candidates. Some of them were just wrong for the state. The mainstream GOP candidates outperformed the Trumper populists on average. That is a message we need to hear.Yes, NY, CA, FL, TX, IA, OH and NC are all success stories with strong candidates and turnout, as well as VA in 2021. They can provide a guide and template for going forward

@umad80 @Aanvals_Kanon Exactly. I always vote straight GOP ticket down the ballot, but I know several people who will sometimes leave a race blank or an issue blank that are on the ballot if they don't have a positive reason to vote for the candidate or issue.

@umad80 @Aanvals_Kanon Agreed. If there is the letter R next to the name, that candidate gets my vote.

@Donjanusgjrdrm Yes - well said. It really is significant and we now have a formidable new Republican with Zeldin, as well as an energized NY GOP. The scale of his victories is what is most impressive to me, and the scale of the margins between him and Cuomo. There will also be four new Republican incumbents in 2024 and incumbents are always more difficult to defeat

@JoycevorTrump needs the Independent and swing voters who chose Democrats in the midterms and rejected his endorsed candidates in several swing states. That is the reality. They are 40% of the voting population and growing.Trump was a disrupter in 2016 when that was needed. The dynamic has changed, and there will likely be a long list of potential candidates in 2024. This has to do with political reality, not the outdated niceties of etiquette. @RonOgletree @umad80 @StevenDouglas

@StevenDouglas @Lisa22 @umad80 I entirely agree. Trump changed the GOP and the country. He is an epochal figure. The old pre-Trump Romney-McCain-Cheney GOP is gone and will not come back.
