Again I stand by what I said. "I can't believe I even have to talk about these people. That's how ridiculous it s."We have the equivalent of the scientologists running the field of AI with untold amounts of money and power and we're the ones who have to do point by point rebuttals of their eugenicists dreams.https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-commentary/billionaires-psychology-tech-politics-1235358129/

"They were like some fringe group that nobody took seriously,” she says of how the tech billionaires who talked up AGI were viewed by those who worked in her field. “Everybody sort of laughed at them out of the room. But because of the money, the billions of dollars that were going into it, they started slowly taking over. Fast-forward to now, this conversation about superintelligence is basically mainstream.”

I know I'm late to the party to be finishing @karenhao's Empire of AI Now. But now that I've finished the book, I can tell you that it is nothing short of a masterpiece. It needs to be required reading for everyone in the tech industry, or anyone who wants to be in the tech industry. The book also articulates why I've had such an aversion to OpenAI since its inception in 2015, more so than any other tech company. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/743569/empire-of-ai-by-karen-hao/

@karenhao I even said that there is a higher chance of me wanting to go back to Google, the company that fired me, than OpenAI. I've never been to fully articulate why I had such an aversion to them, but once you read Empire of AI, you'll understand. Now, Anthropic is being sold as the benevolent alternative to OpenAI, just like OpenAI was sold as the benevolent alternative to Google back in 2015. Don't buy it. Please read the book which is based on years of meticulous reporting by Karen.

Another year, another amazing week at JamCoders. In the photo, the head TA, Zaria Chen Shui, and I were trying to make a heart but I was additionally trying (and failing) to make a JC sign with my fingers 😂 Every time someone talks about "AI" in K-12 education, I think about what it takes to run programs like AddisCoder and JamCoders.

The dedication of the teaching assistants, chaperones and organizing committee, the importance of adjusting the lesson plan according to how the class is responding to the material, the importance of students learning how to learn and what to do when they are challenged and frustrated. The most repeated line throughout the week was, once again, to go through things line by line and on pen and paper.

I would sometimes even turn off the computer monitor in lab so that students stop looking at the computer and think things through and write things down on pen and paper instead. Last year we even made multiple songs on this topic because we were saying it so much. Education is a lot more than placing some material in front of students. Its an incredibly social and collaborative experience which cannot be automated away.

Stanford is prosecuting 11 pro-Palestine protesters on felony vandalism charges & demanding $300K+ in restitution. Consider signing this petition to drop the charges: https://actionnetwork.org/forms/support-the-stanford-12-drop-the-charges-on-studentsUnsurprising although disgusting to see my alma mater on the wrong side of genocide.Watch them use the activism of the students whose lives they’re trying to destroy in some orientation story in a few decades.

There is a movement to "prove that the datacenter water issues is fake". If you venture into Muskrat's hell site, you can see the community note these people put on this great piece of investigative journalism, accusing them of unfairly implicating datacenters. https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/data-center-water-pollution-amazon-oregon-1235466613/

When this "AI" bubble pops, the men pretending they weren't pushing the hype, like "critics" whose position is "AGI is real but LLMs aren't the way," who were in eugenicist and "AI existential risk"🙄 circles, will get specials discussing what they saw coming, when its the women who actually told you so.And then it will be rinse and repeat, onto the next grift.

I see that Fernando Pereira is donating to OpenReview (with a public announcement) because he apparently cares about "open science" or "open research" or some such. That's news to me. He is the Google VP who wrote a condescending, bizarre, what was meant to be anonymous, "privileged and confidential" letter which was then sent to the HR department, instructing me and my coauthors to retract our Stochastic Parrots paper.

Good thing we didn't. I'd say that was a win for "open science." The hypocrisy. Maybe don't use your power to order researchers to retract papers you don't find to be sufficiently full of hype if you claim to care about "open research"?

This institute, cofounded by Musk, circulated an email about me not just internally but to their "partners" a couple of years ago when I started calling them out as eugenicists in the TESCREAL bundle, as we wrote in our paper. They didn't name me but it was clear they were talking about me, hence the reason someone forwarded me the email.
