@slashdot Were those 637,000 people data breach victims before the law firm had their data, or as a result?

@madcap It's revolting, but not unexpected from them. Besides not using their services, avoiding their (and others') mobile apps in favour of browsers can offer some hope for control.Similarly, the multi-account containers plugin for Firefox is great, because you can use separate sandboxes for different purposes.

@tek Also on the coast, but not flat.My watch does altitude, but the fun bit is when I can terrify my wife after the fact by telling her how fast I got going downhill on a bike.Possibly related, it can also cause my phone to call her if it detects a fall. Good to know, some embankments are steep enough, nobody would know if I went over the side.

@tek Absolutely! I am a little unsure about what it takes to trigger mine (Garmin Descent G1), based on when it has and has not triggered. I did have a spectacular splat on a trail run, and it didn't then. Not a busted head, but a dislocated shoulder. Walked out, drove (manual) home, then got a ride to hospital. Future "trail" runs I think will be on nearby logging roads, much less to fall over.

@tek Hahahahaha. Yup, don't recommend doing the splat. Recovery is functionally complete enough to work out again, so easing into that. Haven't been back to running, should restart.Great medical care, some physio (with homework), and quite a few weeks make all the difference.

@jasonkoebler I wonder if these sorts of sites could mitigate the flooding issue most of the way through policies and strict validation of the submitter. Since this one has shut down, it's hard to tell what they had, but some friction is necessary. Submit one piece of garbage, be put in purgatory for a time.As for Amazon encouraging crap, well, they're blatant. What was their restriction, "only" three new books published per day / author? Ugh.

@lmorchard Some overseas workers already laugh that AGI stands for "A Guy in India."See the Amazon self-checkout stores, for example.

@foone To be fair, server-side validation is what they should be doing. Just not borked validation.

@m0xee @davidgerard I have one, a corporate machine for work. I also have better laptops, both in hardware and OS terms, so the crappy corp build gets booted exactly once every three months.(Guess how long the password reset period is?)

@foone Well... that's actually permitted, you can store no more than the first six and last four digits, without having to be in scope for the rest of PCI.As someone else mentioned, the Luhn formula lets you throw away 90% of the rest.I did a demo some time back, to show why this, _combined_ with storing a hash of the full PAN, was a bad idea. Basically, iterate the middle digits, hash those that pass Luhn, compare until you get a hash that matches the stored one. Couple seconds on a laptiop

@Pepijn In an area near where I used to live, they had to disable the motion-activated doors to the hospital ER.Deer were walking through the doors, to eat flowers off the nursing desk.

@ricci @GeoffWozniak It's the "reach-around", except for having to do it yourself. Kind of like customer service via AI chat-bots.

@foone I actually liked it when I got referred one time, because they entrusted me with a CD to take. That gave me all the time to see what I could use to look at my own X-ray imaging before the next appointment.

@foone Just have to be careful to ensure that nobody else is also able to just drop some files in to set up _their_ new service.
