I was working on cleaning beds and pruning this morning when I was quickly reminded that I could be removing the home and habitat of numerous creatures. It's a careful balance between plant care and creature care. Here are two beautiful examples, a female praying mantis and a black and yellow garden spider. #garden #entomology

That's a wrap on summer crops for 2022. Everything is slowing down, drying out, readying for the quiet seasons ahead.

@mistermonster Yeah! We'll pickle the jalapenos and either eat all the sweet peppers or freeze them.

Our peanut harvest is complete. These are Carwile’s Virginia Peanut, a heirloom variety from our local area. The given history says, "Grown by Frank Carwile for over 75 years since he was given this peanut by a traveler when he was 8 years old. He later tried other varieties but found none with a better flavor. "What a fun crop. 🥜 #theField #gardening

Top photo: Our first garden, 2017.Bottom photo: Our current garden. Our first garden had tricky soil, inadequate sunlight, and was difficult to water. But we did it, we ate from it, and we loved it. All of the challenges were opportunities we got to learn from. It's fun to see how we "grow" as we grow.#gardening #garden

@grumpy Ahh yes clay is common around here too. You'll want to add lots of organic matter to amend heavy clay soil. Just breaking it up won't get you far as it will all meld back together or get so heavily compacted it becomes concrete.Squirrels, birds, rabbits, pop in from time to time. Plenty to eat around here for everyone so no real worry for us.

We were recently given this beautiful #vintage (1950's-ish, I think?) Japanese #sewing machine. It's been serviced and I'm looking forward to giving it a spin.

I don't know why January has produced yet another 61°F day, but what I do know is that in 50 years when I think back to all this, I'll remember my profound gratitude for the beautiful day it was - starting more microgreen trays with my best little dude by my side. #food #homesteading

Today we built a new hügelkultur bed along the side of our vegetable garden. Our plans are to build a few more for a nice long block (~20' or so) of new planting area. We're consider using them for blueberries, flowers, and numerous herbs. How we built it:- dug a 2' deep hole (~7' x 2.5')- added one layer of logs- covered logs with thin layer of soil- added a second layer of material: sticks, limbs, and aged corn stalks- topped with a thick layer of soil#gardening

Walking through the gardens today I came upon this newly emerged Tiger Swallowtail! You can see in the image that the wings are still furled. No matter how I moved around it would orient toward me and haphazardly walk my way. It crawled into my hand and I placed it in one of the garden beds where it quickly walked up a garlic stem and let gravity draw its wings out. Moments later it flew away. This literally made my day. It was beyond amazing. ✨ #gardening #entomology
