It is really annoying when instances use the default CloudFlare config or whatever weird pseudo-"CDN" service and it just blocks Tor connections or requires a Google captcha which is honestly worse since that can deanonymize people using Tor unsafely. I wish more admins kept this in mind or maybe even considered not using CloudFlare or a similar service and giving them tons of data about who connects to your site and what they do for free *audible gasp from the sysadmin audience*.I can't just open someone's bio or look at their media on their instance directly anymore.also a note for #MastoDev :give admins the option to use a CDN for specifically non-privately posted media/posts so that instances can scale a bit more without immediately compromising user privacy with a third-party host that vacuums up and sells their metadata to data vendors or whatever other sketchy shit. In this scenario at the very least the only trusted parties should be the instances and the relevant users and not some net infrastructure megacorporation thanks.anyways #FuckCloudFlare

You're doing federation wrong.Don't scale instances, scale the network.pros:- fewer issues with digital landlording services related to bandwidth and storage- moderation is much more manageable and fine-grained- instances do not become clones of "social media" platforms, using their malicious tooling and offers to help scale for more centralized demandcons:- if you're the admin you don't get to control as many users at once :(- hard working surveillance landlords like CloudFlare don't get money from centralizing a federation- oh wait these are just more pros never mindcons (for real this time):- keeping up with the emoji meta is harder, I guessDon't scale instances, scale the network.also making a new instance under the same admin and hosting service as another isn't fooling anyone lol

recognize that the labor theory of value and "communist" systems which attempt to codify people's value by their ability to work are all just variants of ableist economic baggage from Europe.if your economics seeks to distribute goods based on labor it will always create an ableist hierarchy within itself, the goods of labor in a free and just society must go to everyone in need, not to anyone who can give something in exchange. Belief in meritocracy ignores that people can easily get advantages in the form of wealth or power which significantly aid their "merit" or can outright subvert any system trying to evaluate their "merit". It is just complete bullshit. What if we just didn't do jobs we aren't capable of and stopped punishing people for doing different types of work? That would be better than how these meritocratic systems just end up putting incompetent privileged white failsons in roles they're not actually capable of doing because they had a private tutor their entire life to get this job and never learned anything from all the handholding they got, or their parents donated money to all the schools they went to so they'd get in and not drop out before. Ta-da! It may take a while depending on how fast your computer is, so be patient for it to finish. Add any context from visual elements as well if necessary.In addition, if you see someone else's post without a description, consider replying with your own using a CW such as "image description" or manually typing it yourself. You can also @ an OCR bot which will do the same as above in a reply for you (results vary wildly in accuracy), which I won't do here because I don't want to trigger it to reply.This helps keep the timeline accessible for everyone.
