@slack You can talk to your doctor. but also keep in mind the RAT test is calibrated for a strong enough infection to be infectious to others. So if your immune system is doing a good job fighting it then you might not test positive no matter how many RATs you do.

I happened to have both Twitter and Mastodon windows open, and the NZ Supreme Court news diffused to me from person to person about 20 seconds faster here than I got the news via Twitter, which I take as a sign of community coverage of important events news & the critical mass now on here.

A confused anti-vaxer/anti-public health cooker claimed that NZ has highest excess death rate in 100 years. This was quite a novel claim, and one I had never seen the maths done on, so I did the maths (using the same calculations as mortality) and in 2022 NZ had the highest excess death rate since 2019.

@gabriel It was a case of posting without reading the article (and assuming that a big jump from a very below average year to anabove average year meant that it was a very high year) but I was curious about what the result was so worked it out as I'd never seen it calculated.

With covid prevalence currently low but _increasing_, I want to point out doing the same as other countries should mean actually bringing in clear air standards. Which a bunch of countries now have and didn't in the past.https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/covid-19/494912/covid-19-mandatory-self-isolation-period-could-soon-be-relaxed-pm-hints

@clive And after a walk, full in frame, entities are okay, but scenes don’t trigger the object recognition part of the process. So this is another example of an object, not found photo.

Hospital admissions for covid (rather than in hospital with covid) trend for the period from 14th to 22nd of August now public in the tewhatuora shiny app.I'd expect it to track back down a bit next week (matching cases in the very elderly with the protection exit wave)

Over 2020-21 Iceland and Spain had bigger percentage drops (compared to 2017-19) in Pertussis (infectious respiratory disease) rates than NZ, but they seem to be the only countries. The data has prompted thoughts of covid response side effects and lives saved (though other places didn't stop covid)

Christmas week covid prevalence estimate.About 2% of the population infectious. Gathering of random 12 folk w. no precautions is about 22% for someone +ve.Stay home if symptoms = lower risk.Testing on day without symptoms = lower riskOutside = lower risk Also because covid flows along connections & gatherings non-random:If associates +ve or symptoms = higher risk.If nobody in household has symptoms/+ve = lower risk(canary in coalmine group infection).Enjoy your white wine in the sun.

If people check poops.nz, they will see nationally we are in a covid wave the like of which we have not seen for 53 weeks (since the start of last winter). Dunedin looks to be leading this one, so should be the first to give good evidence of duration, but as of now the most likely situation is 3-4 weeks of cases higher than last week for Dunedin, 4-6 weeks for other centres (and Wellington is still at normal rather than wave levels of covid)
