@robpike @mostalive đ One of the very early influences on my software career. His book The Mythical Man Month had a huge impact on me as a baby engineer since it was describing the very anti patterns I was seeing *every day* and thinking âthis isnât rightâ.Thank you Fred. You will be missed. But your legacy will live on. I shall continue to threaten difficult management with two copies of your book so they can read it twice as fastâŚ.

OopsâŚ.âSamsungâs Android app-signing key has leaked, is being used to sign malwareâAlso, can someone remind me again why putting backdoors into common encryption algorithms is a good idea because the keys âwill never leakâ?https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/12/samsungs-android-app-signing-key-has-leaked-is-being-used-to-sign-malware/

Itâs always nice to see ideas I published resurface and gain traction after being dormant for years đ¤ˇââď¸

Anyone using the Apple MacBook Air M3 with Jetbrains tools? Good enough, or underpowered for that sort of thing?

Radical idea: How about hiring developers who know how to use a database instead? đ¤ âCouncil says [apostrophes] must go to suit computer databasesâhttps://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/article/2024/may/05/north-yorkshires-dropped-apostrophe-for-street-signs-upsets-residents

Iâm looking at getting fibre to the home connected - it has finally arrived in the village where I live! - and one of the providers says they can âmanage my wifi for meâ.*Really?* 𤨠So they can get into my router from outside my network, into my mesh nodes and monitor performance/change config remotely? They say itâs âa serviceâ. I say the Gigaspire Blast routers they are offering have been backdoored đŠThoughts?

MmmâŚ.seems the router manufacturers use this as a selling featureâŚâEvery GigaSpire BLAST system is managed by your service provider so they can fix issues before they occur and ensure a simple, amazing experience.â(Right beside âFully SecureââŚoh the irony!)https://www.blastwifi.com/blast-u6/

I canât seem to get a straight answer out of the ISP, so I hunted around the router manufacturer site. Seems that yes, ISP support *can* connect into the router at will and tinker with settings.âthe Wi-Fi systems that you provide for your managed WiFi service can be managed remotely by your customer support team.âIMO this is not a feature, it is a big, fat security #fail. I wonât be attaching one of these to my network any time soon. https://aem-web-dev.calix.com/content/dam/calix-com/assets/solutions/roles/report/subscriber-experience-managed-wifi.pdf

Also I am getting the impression that this family of routers (Gigaspire Blast) donât let mere paying customers change the advanced settings. Itâs for ISPs who donât trust their customers with settings like DNS resolvers, open ports, routing tables, subnets etc. âNanny knows bestâ #fail

Finally the fog begins to clear, and I received a technical answer to my queries. There is an open standards protocol TR-069 that allows this kind of tinkering without needing full router access.Iâm still not entirely sure about how I feel about it, but 1. AFAICS on initial quick look itâs not ssh access, and2. Embarrassingly, I have noticed that my current provider has TR-069 & TR-369 access into my current router, and has for years đłhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TR-069

@matthewskelton @tdpauw That fits with my subjective experience over my career. Women engineers I have worked with, with a few exceptions, have tended to be highly competent and collaborative.Arguably the exceptions were showing learned toxic behaviours that they developed working in a system where the odds were heavily stacked against them đ¤ˇââď¸ (not an excuse, but a possible reason)

1st May. Ah yes, that means tomorrow is 2nd May, and polling day in the UK for local elections. Remember to- Take suitable ID (after all, a whole **2** people were convicted of electoral fraud in 2022 đą <cough>voter suppression<cough>)- Remember your ABC. âAnyone But Conservativeâ.- If in doubt, check a tactical voting site for who to vote for to remove the Tory incumbent.
