Today I started with learning uxntal and I have to admit, it made me incredible happy. I got a smirk all over my face and a happy feeling in my tummy when I solved the first two exercises.I'm going along with the tutorial by compudanzas and I'm really looking forward to the next day.https://compudanzas.net/uxn_tutorial.html

Thanks @pixouls 💖 I think what the uxn ecosystem and @compudanzas tutorial are able to convey is a joy in coding, a joy in recreational computing, and somehow, a way of caring for the larger-then-self through one's own practice ☺️ That last part I particularly struggled with again and again, working as a programmer, producing nothing but waste.

Day 2 of the compudanzas #uxn tutorial was a bit rougher.I had a particular tough time today concentrating, with the rain outside pouring and inviting me to just do nothing and be cozy. The real difficulty I had is wrapping my head around the specific logics of an assembler language. I'm used to being very very very high up in terms of abstraction-layers and up there you don't have to abstract much in your mind…In my case postfix notation, and all the other things like words and macros and what not were quite accessible. I struggle most with the way *values* have drastically different effects and meanings depending in which order you put them where 😅 But I got my squares onto the screen and tomorrow is day 3!

@neauoire absolutely not, in terms of concepts. What would help, at least in my case, would be to have the chance to practise more at each step. The exercises are fun and challenging and I always learn best during attempts of solving „real“ problems. I believe certain modes of coding just need to be practiced to grasp them. Do it until it clicks. For me, coming from the domain of web-development (incl. backend), practicing more the way of how values are at once literals, hexadecimals, ports, sprites, shifts and what not, would help ☺️ higher up these concepts are neatly packed into subdomains and classes and don’t take up much mental space

@neauoire Thank you both for the recommendations and the kind words. As usual I'm not gentle enough with the process. I listened to you today and took it a notch down.@phoebos Could you elaborate on dc(1) and the `f`command, I didn't understand that 😅

„Ceiling time“ is a term my partner uses to describe me starring at the ceiling, being completely lost in thoughts and daydreams 💖 it’s a lovely practice we all should indulge in more often

I just finished Vibrant Matter by Jane Bennet... after 9 years of being on and off this book. And it was worth it. I'm into the thing/multispecies/nonhuman discourse for a good while and I always struggled with exactly one major problem that this book addresses so well. How to flatten the ontology, when one comes from a place of hierarchy. Or more specifically: I grew up in central Europe with all its background of racism, colonialism, sexism, homo- and transphobia and you name it, all designed to create hierarchies of power. And now I should be able to step outside these not just for people and animals, but also cumulus clouds, lithium, cockroaches, doorknobs, and blades of grass? Many indigenous communities have their specific ways of incorporating such a view, deeply rooted in their respective stories.I don't have these and I'm jealous of them.

One of the most fascinating paths for me is the attribution of personhood through jurisdictional processes, such as the river Whanganui in Aotearoa, and many more examples by now. I figured the law is a language westerners like me understand, epistemologically speaking. A lot of ontological negotiations are happening via this path. What is subject, object, or agency are questions that are relegated to the language of the law.I found Jane Bennett's approach to political philosophy similar but different. It is richer in depth, poetics and individuality, also because of her style. It speaks directly to my practice and daily experience. It ends with epistemological violence that I enjoy quite a lot. It is shaking the fundamentals on which my everyday experience is based and it is refreshing, even exhilarating at times. And I have the feeling that it gives me a vocabulary to speak what I'm feeling.

Listen #Mosstodon, the Botanical Garden of Basel has a ✨ moss house ✨ It's an utterly cute place with a plethora of utterly cute "inconspicuous and very old moss-like plants, lycopods and ferns"!https://botgarten.unibas.ch/en/garden/greenhouses/moss-house

I went through @compudanzas uxn tutorials once, had fun, and forget everything again. So I did it again, but this time I tried to make some literate programming style notes about all the different aspects I'm picking up. I'm through with my second attempt and I have to say that it was worth the effort. At least the basics stuck now (or so he hoped...)The notes can be found here but I haven't cleaned up anything yet. I'm pretty sure I have some conceptual mistakes in there as well. The format is also not very consistent along the notes, since I lost patience with myself at times.https://codeberg.org/thgie/literate-uxn#uxn #LiterateProgramming

So I needed to get become better acquainted with the uxntal opcodes AND I wanted to fiddle around with Decker. So I made a uxntal opcode flashcards deck.https://jache.re/assets/opcodes.htmlI added it to the literate-uxn repository, under "practice".https://codeberg.org/thgie/literate-uxnDecker is awesome!#uxntal #Decker

I felt courageous and attempted to code the classic slash/backslash pattern creation program in uxntal. The pseudo random number generator that is needed to decide which character shall be rendered is pretty rough, but it's mine and I'm happy with it :)The program's code is in my literate-uxn repository.https://codeberg.org/thgie/literate-uxn/src/branch/master/examples/003-10-print.tal#uxn #Generative

My dungeon crawler looks nicer now, and I implemented an action menu to let us do more things besides walking around. Now we can also flip coins!#DecemberAdventure #Sunflower #BASIC

I browse #DecemberAdventure every now and then and you people are doing fantastic work! It's cute, it's weird, it's personal and meaningful, and I'm discovering so many awesome small projects and intriguing people. This is the world we could have. That's all, please continue ✨(Thanks @eli_oat 💖)

Day 8 of #DecemberAdventureI took a risk and sidequested today. Guessed I came to a point where I need to do some narrative writing for my dungeon crawler and took the chance to look at ink script, some kind of markdown for interactive fiction. I ended up re-programming the BASIC version of the crawler in ink script. But it's really fun, like writing pseudo code, that can actually run.The process helped me tremendously in figuring out how to interlock the two core mechanics with the narrative and create a game loop that progresses the player towards different ends. Now I need to fill in the details.

@neauoire It's genuingly amazing how the mind can go wild when given simple toys. I felt like that mind-blown gif with the fireworks in the background. Then I continued setting up little tardigrade producing moss factories.

Day 19, 20, 21, and 22 of #DecemberAdventureBrought most of the things together and polished it to be with as little bugs as possible. Today I cared mostly about getting it running in the browser, so I can push it to https://thgie.itch.io/sunflower-coin-crawler. Once again a thankful shoutout to @neauoire who supported me in getting things done. It's still a work in progress, but publishing it somewhere helps me get some pressure up and keep doing it. I felt how the motivation to get going waned a bit over the last few days and I hat to stop myself to start a new project on something completely different. As of now the game has- procedural generated map (rooms and doors)- an event and encounter mechanic- a battle system molded around coin flips- a narrative engine hanging on the central value of "clarity"Next I want to implement the inventory system but keep it simple for now. After that I would love to add more content, to bring some variety into gameplay.
