"Do you want to _?" * "Yes"* "Maybe later".To whoever designs this style of interface: be an adult and accept rejection, don't be like a abusive boyfriend that doesn't take "no" for an answer. It's perfect fine to have the "Maybe Later" option as long as there is a "No". Forcing people who don't want to do something to say "Maybe later" isn't a good look. It makes your whole product seem creepy as fuck with no respect for consent.Maybe later? Maybe go fuck yourself.#ui #ux #DarkPattern

Dark Tranquillity streamed a *live, no audience (COVID), concert in 2021 of the entire tracklist from their album Moment just after the album release. I think the lineup is Mikael Stanne, Martin Brändström (keys), Anders Iwers (bass), Anders Jivarp (drums), Chris Ammot (guitar), Johan Reinholdz (guitar). It's a very high quality performance and recording.Read about it here: https://www.sonicperspectives.com/concert-reviews/dark-tranquillity-november-2020/Watch it for free on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vn2vGV07jIE#DarkTranquillity #Melodeath #Live #Metal

Lots of people on here seem upset about Kagi. What's a less problematic search engine? Here are the reasons I like Kagi:1. No tracking 2. I pay for it, instead of being Ad supported (selling my eyeballs/attention)I don't look up porn and I don't want to see it, so I actually appreciate that they filter it out.#search

Music production would be utterly controlled by private industry, and you'd have to use either Microsoft's or Apple's privacy and agency obliterating operating systems to do it, if it weren't for open standards like MIDI (41 years old!). Novation didn't bother to write drivers for Linux for my MiniNova, but they did include MIDI ports, so I'm good to go. Open standards are why we _can_ have nice things.#OpenStandards #MIDI

Would you be offended if someone used "they/them" pronouns for you after they already know your gender and/or preferred pronouns? (I'm trying to figure out who might be offended if I stop using gendered language altogether. Boost for science. Feel free to comment instead, if none of these answers apply to you.)#gender #pronouns

I have a weird lump under my skin on my arm. I made an appointment with my primary care physician which took a few weeks. She took one look and referred me to Dermatology to have it removed and tested. I got an automated message from Dermatology that it will take 5 to 6 weeks to schedule an in-person appointment. That's just to schedule it. The actual visit will be scheduled 11 to 13 months out. I hope it isn't cancerous, LOL, because it will be under my skin for another year. #lump #USA

More updates on being forced to use LLMs to help write code: I think my estimate of a 10 to 20% increased productivity from using LLMs to help me do my job as a software engineer might be a high estimate. After spending more time and talking with coworkers, it's pretty hard to extract much value from tools like Copilot. There just a few types of tasks that it does OK at, but it needs so much review and hand-holding, that most of the gains might be lost due to this overhead.#ai #llm

I love #metal. I love live #concerts. I do not understand why every live metal show needs to be at literally hearing-destroying #volume. It makes no sense. If you love music, why would you want to lose your ability to enjoy it? Why would you want to destroy the ability of others to hear it? Young people are dumb and don't wear ear protection at concerts. I know I didn't and regret it. Imagine a metal show where you could hear the music clearly and it didn't damage your hearing.

Gender and sexuality is a spectrum. People want to draw circles around parts of the spectrum and label them. Everyone disagrees on the labels, and people don't want to be mislabeled according to their own categorizations and how they identify. There are good and bad reasons to label areas of the spectrum, but this will always be contentious and unsatisfactory. My kids are non-conforming. I'd say "queer" but that term is fraught, and somebody will get mad about it. 1/n

Why are my kids non-conforming? Probably because we never taught them to conform to gender norms or let anyone else tell them to. We're all on the spectrum. I'm more or less a cishet male person, because I was raised and taught to be that. I was taught a gender performance and it became my performance. My "true" gender is probably non-binary, or "don't care" or "not really much of anything". I've always been straight, but I'm probably a 1 or 2 on the Kinsey scale. 2/n

Being misgendered sucks and I get why people have won their genders with a hard fight to prove to enough people around them that they are what they are. I support that fully. I also think that maybe we could all just be a little less obsessive about it. I've talked about this before, but its rude to assume anyone's gender, and, frankly, kinda rude to ask. If you're offended by being called "they/them", then you really need to wear a pin or something with your preferred pronouns on it. 3/n

Using gendered language all the time (which is completely normal in our society) is just fucking wild to me. Imagine our language infused another social construct into the words, like race, for example. Just fucking bonkers, we'd stop using the language and see it as wildly out of date. I do believe that in like 100 years, assuming we continue to progress socially, normal kind people will not be using gendered language about strangers. 4/n

The coffee shop I go to has a sign which asks customers to not assume the gender of any employee. Also, when I asked on here if people would be offended if I used they/them pronouns for everyone, a lot of people, mostly non-conforming people, said they would be offended. What pronouns should I be using for people that I don't know, who aren't wearing a sign that tells me. According to the sign in the coffee shop, I'm pretty sure they/them is the correct thing. 5/n

I get it, if I were a binary (very specifically male or female) trans person who worked hard on my performance, being called "them" could feel like intentional misgendering. I'm not arguing against that, but I did feel disappointed that if I decided to stop using gendered language altogether, I would start offending people, specifically marginalized non-conforming people. Like, we can't opt-out of gender, I guess. 6/n

You can't not think about it. You can't ignore gender, as much as you might like to, even though it is just made up terms we apply to rough circles we draw around different areas of a fluid spectrum of possibilities.Look, kids these days care less about gender than you or I do. I know so many kids who use they/them as their pronouns (among my own and their classmates and their classmates siblings). The less gender roles are enforced by parents, the less kids grow up identifying with one. 7/n

Just think about it, if nobody even told you about genders, you wouldn't have one. They are imaginary constructs. If people want a gender, they can have one. That's fine. If they want to have people use gendered pronouns for them, they can ask them to. If someone asks me, or if they have a pin with pronouns on it, I will always use their preferred pronouns. It's just rude to do otherwise. 8/n

Another thing that kids do is use gender neutral pronouns more often than anyone else. They constantly refer to their friends as they/them, even the ones who don't include they/them in their preferred pronouns. That's just how it is. I envy them. They spend less time thinking about gender. I can't, but maybe my kids will get away with just not using gendered language, if not, then the generation after that, probably. n/n

@futurebird @dancingtreefrog In a hex number, the symbols A - F are considered digits and this is confirmed by Merriam-Webster definition of "digit" (1a). Symbol, element, character and digit are all correct terms. Of these, "digit" is the most specific.
