There is still a part of me that's alive and well inside a Blockbuster Video that, in reality, closed in the mid-2000s.

Ok, look. I am going to say some things that may not sit well with people, but... I gotta say it.I OWNED a Nintendo Virtual Boy. It was... terrible. I think in the time since then, people have romanticized it a LOT more than they needed to. And I am... insulted that Nintendo is trying to sell a novelty Switch 2 "shell" to let you turn it into a Virtual Boy, much in the same way that you might coat your $500 wagyu steak in ketchup to mask the... flavor and quality....AND it's $100 for this "shell", and all it does is hold the switch at "eye" level (more on that later), it doesn't do anything else. You still need a Switch Online subscription to actually access the games.

Here's some real facts from someone who tried very, very hard to love this thing.Stat-wise, the thing is a mess. Coming out after the GBC but before the GBA, it had a display size of 384×224, which is impressive compared to the GB/GBC screen size of 160×144... or even the GBA's 240×160... but it only supported 4 colors, and all of them were LASER POINTER RED.And for processors... it was technically a 32-bit processor, with a higher clock speed and even more ram than a GBA... but almost all of that was sunk into making the 3D effects work, which meant most games - if played with only one eye - were basically just glowing red Gameboy games. And that's assuming that the motor that spun the mirror that powered the screen didn't fail (a common issue) or the mirror didn't get stuck (also common).

It was also one of the least "user friendly" interfaces that Nintendo has ever designed. The design was explicitly NOT "very human".It was a headset, but it was too heavy to strap to your face, and came with a stand that was too short to reach your face if you sat it on a table and weren't 4 ft tall. Prepare to crane your neck in an uncomfortable angle, no matter what you do.The controller was... bad and weird, compared to the N64 controller in terms of "buttons you didn't need in places you couldn't use". The arms were too long, each side had a D-pad on the outside and two buttons on the inside, no triggers or grip buttons. And that's where the batteries lived, so it was heavy too. It also BURNED through batteries as fast as it burned through your retina.

The thing that has always amazed and confused me is that Nintendo DID eventually figure out how to do 3D games in a way that didn't murder people's eyeballs... in the 3DS.The 3DS had a lot of emulation titles on it, too, able to play a ton of different retro titles that the system natively emulated. But you know what it DIDN'T play?VIRTUAL BOY GAMESBecause WHY WOULD ANYBODY EVER WANT TO PLAY A VIRTUAL BOY GAME?!?The only good game - and this is a hill I will die on, and I owned like 6 games for this fucker, was the Wario game. It was basically like a half-step between the Warioland (Mario Land 3) and Warioland 2.And fun thing about that title - a developer proposed a modern color remake of that game to Nintendo during the 3DS era... and you know what Nintendo said?WHY WOULD ANYBODY EVER WANT TO PLAY A VIRTUAL BOY GAME?!?

Fun Fact: If you start watching Morbius (2022) at 11:05 PM tonight, by midnight you will have turned off the movie in disgust because seriously why in the hell did they think that movie was a good idea.

@kyonshi Western/European traditions do have our own "warrior monks", but they were closer to the Paladin class - while still being monks and priests, they fought with swords and shields and other typical weaponry. Templars, crusaders, that sort of thing.
