For #TombTuesday this is Windmill Tump Neolithic long barrow near Rodmarton in Gloucestershire. It's been damaged by excavation, but has the remains of several chambers.#Folklore tells of a tunnel running from the chambers (I don't know where to) and a fabled golden coffin.Visited January 2010.#Neolithic #Gloucestershire #LongBarrow

A moody day in South Wales for #StandingStoneSunday. This is Carreg Wen Fawr Y Rugos stone row (something of a rarity in this area), up on the limestone hills above Llangynidr, with marvellous views north across the Usk valley to the Black Mountains. The row consists of a very long, tapering recumbent stone (if upright it would be over 2m tall) and at least 8 other smaller standing stones. Visited on a drizzly day in May 2010.#StoneRow #BlackMountains #BronzeAge #SouthWales

A little standing stone in a terrific setting for today's #StandingStoneSunday Mynydd Illtyd standing stone is less than a metre tall, but makes up for it with the backdrop of Pen-y-Fan and Corn Du, the highest summits in South Wales. The wonderful Cerrig Duon stone circle and Maen Mawr outlier for today's #StandingStoneSunday. One of my favourite stone circles, it sits in the upper valley of the Afon Tawe (which meets the sea at Abertawe/Swansea). Maen Mawr is not part of the circle, standing just outside it; there are diminutive stone rows aligned on Maen Mawr. The valley and mountains above (Y Mynydd Du) are rich with Bronze Age archaeology. This visit June 2010.#BronzeAge #YMynyddDu #BannauBrycheiniog #StoneCircle

A fine day on the #WyeValleyWalk today, walking the section between Newbridge and Rhayader. Not so close to the river as last time, but some beautiful spring woods full of bluebells, some striking upland landscapes, a likely Bronze Age standing stone on the later site of a churchyard, and an exciting bouncy suspension bridge to cross the Afon Elan at its confuence with Afon Gwy in the style of Indiana Jones. Less than 30 miles to the source now.#AfonGwy #Rhayader #BronzeAge

Another marvellous section of #WyeValleyWalk today, between Rhayader and Llangurig. Some big climbs, the total ascent over the 12 miles was over 600 metres. Beautiful plunging valleys, a late medieval farmhouse turned visitor centre at Gilfach, bluebell woods, a terrific Bronze Age kerbed cairn in a wonderful location, and views of Pumlumon and the source of the Gwy. #AfonGwy #BronzeAge #Rhayader #Llangurig #RadnorshireWildlifeTrust

Fantastic scorching day on the #BeaconsWay today, on the always quiet hills (deserted) of Fforest Fawr between Craig-y-Nos and Storey Arms.Started off on Carreg Cadno, which I'm happily translating as Fox Rocks. Appropriate as my only companion at the station earlier was a fox.A revisit to Maen Madoc standing stone and the Bronze Age cairn on Fan Llia. First time I've been up here since the official renaming of the National Park.#StandingStoneSunday #BronzeAge #BannauBrycheiniog #DeCymru

Lovely Yellowmead stone circle on Dartmoor for #StandingStoneSunday A very unusual site of concentric stone rings, it may have been a complex cairn originally. It has a visual interrelationship with Sheepstor.Visited August 2010 in very changeable weather.#Dartmoor #BronzeAge #StoneCircle

A quick bit of #Defaidodon action for you this evening. A couple of sheep give scale to Big Scenery. Tyrrau Mawr and Craig-y-Llyn, two of the satellite peaks of Cader Idris, both sporting fine Bronze Age cairns, rising above Llyn Cyri. From a wonderful walk from Abermaw (Barmouth) this time last year.#CaderIdris #CadairIdris #GogleddCymru #Mountains #BronzeAge

Long shadows for today's #StandingStoneSunday the fabulous Boswens menhir on the West Penwith moors. The stone is very asymmetrical and looks different from every angle. If you walk along the Tinner's Way below it, the stone appears as a tall figure on the skyline, which turns to watch you as you pass. It's intervisible with the marvellous Chûn Quoit Neolithic tomb. This visit on a beautiful autumn day, November 2010.#BronzeAge #StandingStone #WestPenwith #Cornwall #TheModernAntiquarian

The remains of Old Rayne recumbent stone circle in Aberdeenshire for today's #StandingStoneSunday The massive recumbent is decorated with cupmarks (decorative circular depressions, carved into the stone using tools) and has fallen along with most of the circle. Folklore records the site being used as a judicial court of the king.Visited April 2012, the last site on a fantastic day of stone-bothering.#Aberdeenshire #RecumbentStoneCircle #StoneCircle #Folklore
