How much do you spend on coffee a month? Or getting lunch out? Could you put some of that money aside instead?I'm in a very privileged, stable position at the moment, but I wasn't always. Quite a few years ago I was months away from bankruptcy, and it was only through the generosity of friends and total strangers that I was able to pull through — someone who helped me told me to "pay it forward, when you can".I believe in universal basic income, a benefits system funded by taxes which is easy to access, and free healthcare. I also know that this idealistic future is a way off, if it ever comes to be.Until then, and even then, we must make mutual aid a cornerstone of our solidarity.For those of us who are privileged enough to have a safe surplus of reliable income, I honestly believe it's our duty to put money aside for unconditional mutual aid.For the price of a few coffees a month, you could be in a position to say "yes, I can help you".

A very please be quiet to the boring people who turn up in the replies of any post which mentions donating money to Wikipedia and proceeds to whine that the Foundation has "tons of money".The numbers you quote often come from the Wikimedia Endowment Fund, which WMF isn't allowed to just use for whatever. It's to ensure the longevity of the "sum of all human knowledge".
