Imagine if just one cell carrier:- kept none or quickly purged location logging- ensured all of their towers were unable to be simulated- enforced encrypted texts- sold no metadata- physically secured every access point- kept no history of user activity- demanded warrants for all data access#privacy #mobile #cell

If you haven't watched Aral Balkan's @aral plea to the EU in regards to #decentralization, #encryption, #privacy, #security, #federation and the impact of #siliconvalley on our lives, consider watching it now. This is not just an EU issue.https://video.lqdn.fr/videos/watch/70f2128c-8c06-4cc4-8a5a-bf77e765c8fdIt is well worth 17 minutes of your time, and right in line with this conversation. If we work together, we can help create a better internet.

#Google demonstrates once again, that you should probably own your own data, and certainly not leave it up to "free" services. Storage is storage. One should not have to open a bin of photos every two years, unless you want someone to come into your home to throw it away. What does Google care if we look at something or not? Use #Nextcloud to host your own storage, put things on a backup drive, burn CDS, use flash storage, etc for longterm storage in a private and secure way.

This. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2020/12/facebook-doomsday-machine/617384/#Facebook is not a social company. It is not a media company. It is a doomsday machine. This is an article to share on your Facebook wall if you still have one. This is one of the least reassuring quotes regarding #COVID19 vaccination "passports" and tracing -"Rest assured, the nerds are on it," said Brian Behlendorf of The Linux Foundation.https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/27/tech/coronavirus-vaccine-passport-apps/index.html1. Demand #privacy or else. 2. Paper options must be available. 3. We are not required to trust #tech companies to maintain our privacy - especially those connected to a government. 4. This is easily solved with a printed QR code "receipt" from the office where vaccinations occur.

Do you work for a web development company? - Does your "product owner" consider #privacy to be important? - Do they feel there are no alternatives to #Google and other big #tech? If not, are they the right person for the job?

In order to protect the #privacy, #health and information #security of the people and users at your business, consider creating a crisis plan / continuation of business plan today. Like no other time in the US, we are entering uncharted waters, and having at least the basics of a threat mitigation plan will reduce the time in which you can act in case of emergency. Protect your people. Protect their data. #uspol #business #infosec

A good way to fight against #Facebook's anti-privacy ways is to ditch #WhatsApp today. This is already happening in droves since there is a "share data with Facebook or else" in play. There are better solutions. They don't need to be perfect, but they should be encrypted as a start and weigh your options for other needs. One thing to avoid is texting over SMS as an alternative, as this is not secure.

At the heart of the #privacy problem, there is often a #privilege problem. People that control technology routinely undermine the privacy freedoms of the public as they become entranced by shiny new things and dollar signs. When you can, develop smaller tech.Always strive for ethical tech. Consider placing user needs above your own. If you can't, you might not be making ethical decisions. This is our regular reminder to use an encrypted password manager...Keep your personal, school and work accounts safer by using an encrypted password manager. Never store your passwords in the browser. We recommend https://www.keepassxc.org but any encrypted manager is better than none!#KeepassXC is an amazing #opensource project with a lot of polish. Keep projects like this alive by donating to their #developers.

Have you been blocked by Cloudflare from using a website because you are on a VPN? Cloudflare and the World Wide Web are not one in the same. #Cloudflare routinely blocks competitor's VPN's. Our hope is that @protonvpn and other #VPN providers begin to file anti-competitive lawsuits against these practices. People should not be harassed by a global data bully for choosing to use a competitor's product.

This post from @Edent is really spot-on about our #techprivilege problem: https://mastodon.social/@Edent/105622111811781065The #web experience of those without fancy devices (or for anyone wanting speed, accessibility and freedom) may be negatively impacted by a lack of empathy for their needs. #Tech privilege allows us to implement bad practices ranging from usability to privacy. If we decide to make the web about sharing information instead of taking it, the world will be better. Need: Simple. Fast. Private.

Is one of the things holding people back on their break from #bigtech #socialmedia the idea that having followers is the same thing has having productive conversations?

The idea that website owners have "a right" to track the clicks from their emails to you and to know everything about your journey in their system is wrong. Imagine if you buy your child a bike - does the chain manufacturer have a right to know what time they use the bike and which friends they visit?Of course not. We should stop pretending that websites are magical experiences that require persistent intrusion. #Privacy is a right, even though it is far from being legally declared so.
