I'm regretting not backing @mwl's #RunYourOwnEmailServer Kickstarter when I had the chance. I've been seeing photos of paperbacks appearing through the letterboxes of various fedi users and I'm slightly jealous.Might have to invest in a digital copy to stop the sad.https://www.tiltedwindmillpress.com/product/ryoms-ebook/

@ActionRetro Hey! Hope all is well. Do you think you'll have a chance to upgrade this instance to 4.1.x or 4.2.x soon?

Decided not to take part in this year's RetroChallenge. Work's been busy and I've not generally been in the best MH state to take on something new.Instead, I've dipped into some #ctran stuff and started looking at #FreePascal unit tests with FPCUnit. I'm also doing a little research into the next SDK app I'll be rewriting.I've also just made a purchase that I'll be showing off at RetroFest in Cambridge in November!Still, as @miah said to me, every month can be retrocomputing writing month!

@justine I can see the image if I use the Mastodon web interface from my instance, but not from the Megalodon app.

@nini It does worry me, considering 4.0.15 was released in February. It would be a shame to move, because I've got two years of posts here. If an upgrade happens in the best few weeks, then great. Otherwise I'm thinking of moving to oldbytes.space.

Some day I know I'm going to go down a #COBOL rabbit hole. Not today. Probably not in the next couple of years. But I just *know* it's gonna happen.

@Linux_in_a_Bit If you do ever fancy trying Vim-land again, I can highly recommend Lazyvim, which adds a good selection of plugins and manageability to NeoVim. I generally get away with knowing the bare minimum of Vim motions to get me by.But Kate is an excellent choice, too. I tend to use it if I'm doing mouse-heavy tasks. I've also used it in the past to edit some very large Markdown files.

       Got a new toy! A #Psion HC120 corporate/industrial handheld. The HC range was the precursor to the Workabout range.#retrocomputing #vintagecomputing #16bit #rs232

The DDoS attack on #InternetArchive seems to have ended, so take the opportunity to change your password as soon as possible. But be prepared to have to change it again... Remember, IA haven't yet officially announced that the security hole has been closed.

#InternetArchive has been invaluable for me while doing #Psion research over the past 6 years.Long-dead personal websites with copies of old software and source code were retrieved from the Wayback Machine. Old manuals and software were easy to access from the main site. Invaluable information that would otherwise have been lost.#DigiPres

Has anyone got any tips on converting #TASM and #MASM code to a more modern assembler like #NASM? Even just between TASM and MASM would be helpful.I've got a few old bits of #Psion 8086 assembly that I'd like to use with NASM. My son is to remove as many proprietary tools as possible.I guess I'm looking for some sort of Rosetta stone for 8086 Small Memory Model assembly.Books, web pages and video suggestions welcome.#x86 #Borland #RetroComputing

@fredbrooker Thanks for the suggestion, but there is no link in your message and I can't find the site with a search engine. Could you send it again, please?

@fredbrooker Oh, I did find that one but couldn't see how to convert from TASM/MASM to NASM. But I'm tired, so that's probably not helping. I'll look properly in the morning. Thank you.

HPE/Aruba making me jump through hoops to download firmware for low-end switches (OfficeConnect 1820) is NOT cool.I'm not an organisation. I'm an individual who just wants some bloody firmware!

Well, as I've hit a dead-end with the firmware, I'm going to move on to IPsec VPN shenanigans. OpenWrt on a BT Hub 5a and Cisco ASA 5505.And before anyone says anything, this is for training people, not prod. One of these devices is not safe to be used on the internet anymore, and it's not the BT Hub.

It has been 0 days since I struggled to get a Java WebStart app working on a modern OS.But here we are with ASDM running on Debian with Oracle JRE 8. (No, it won't run with OpenJDK.) I've had to disable a fair amount of security to get this running, because the best security an ASA5505 can do is TLS1.0 and SHA1.Buy old ASAs, I thought. They'll be good for training, I thought. In future I'm just going to buy old PCs with quad NICs and stick OPNsense on them. Or old EdgeRouters with OpenWrt.
