So. I once gave a talk about what software engineers can learn from air crash investigation (online/pre-recorded). This talk is close to my heart and I'd really like to do it again, in front of a live audience this time. Does anyone have venue suggestions? I need a minimum 35 minute time slot, so my beloved code4lib is not an option. (I worked very hard to get it down to 30, and only managed 32:30. I could easily go longer.) It's programming-language-agnostic. Ideas? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0P3AUznSPU

@jomo maybe! I haven’t traveled much of anywhere since 2020 and BOY DO I MISS IT (The talk can only be in English, but for getting around outside the venue, I can stumble through a bit of German or Spanish or, uh, in case this helps, Latin)

@jomo oh wow, is there a link to that talk anywhere? I looked but could not find 2022 stuff. I would love to watch it (very slowly if it's in German 😁).

“I will burn the session to the ground over this bill.”Nebraska state senator Machaela Cavanaugh has been filibustering every. single. bill for three straight weeks to prevent the advancement of a bill that would ban gender-affirming care for minors. #NotAllHeroesWearCapeshttps://apnews.com/article/filibuster-transgender-gender-affirming-therapy-bill-nebraska-cavanaugh-b9018fd1bf72112ca984ff58679eda6d

@simon Gahhh! Literally the first thing I do with a new device is turn off all the notifications that make noise (and most of the ones that don't)

So this is cool: https://www.universalhub.com/2023/you-cant-book-ride-t-bus-you-can-now-ride-t-bus-e The Boston Public Library has partnered with the MBTA (local transit agency) to make digital books/newspapers/magazines available at bus stops via QR code. No library card needed -- it's a teaser for library services.Looking at the map (https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1arG5pWUkQ2SKjmEvn4rEgIC4hg9pq_U&ll=42.320167945704355%2C-71.096785&z=12) they've also done a good job scattering them throughout the city, serving a variety of populations.

They...cured lupus??? https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-03968-6 I mean. It's a hella intense, sci-fi treatment, and we're talking only a dozen or two patients, but they have actually knocked down four different autoimmune diseases here and it...works??

On August 22, 1985, a British airplane experienced an engine failure and subsequent fire on the runway. The pilots aborted the takeoff, fire services responded promptly, flight attendants ran the evacuation with heartbreaking heroism - and the incident shocked the world when 55 people died, even though the plane had never left the ground. In consequence, worldwide, we:* changed cabin materials to be safer in the event of fire* added emergency lighting guiding people toward exits1/

       * updated cabin layouts to make emergency exits more accessible* conducted research into psychology & human factors affecting aviation incident survival* recognized that flight attendants are utterly critical to emergency survival, and updated their training accordinglyThis expanded on regulations responding to 1960s-era accidents which require (to this day) passenger airplanes to be capable of evacuation within 90 seconds. 2/

The regulations were good but they were not enough; people were shocked and dismayed, and turned that into action. When you think about how, in the context of the appalling footage from Haneda, no one on the Airbus died, remember that. It was not (only) a miracle. It was the result of disciplined investigation, training, engineering, information sharing, and worldwide cooperation over decades. So, okay, maybe it was a miracle. But of a fundamentally different kind. /fin

An SQL injection bug that lets you bypass airport security and even JUMP SEAT. Sure. This is great. I’m not having a heart attack or anything. TSA response is definitely also chef’s-kiss. *breathes into a paper bag* https://ian.sh/tsa
