@codesections you would allow every authenticated user to pretend being some other user because the SMTP server would not know anymore who is talking to it.

@mike I guess not being able to look at cat memes for a while would be way down on the list of our problems. Also, I'm a ham radio op, so to answer your question: qsstv would still work and be my source for cat memes.

@kev my bet: malware testing known security bugs in an attempt to own your system makes a fair share of that load.

@kev you're mistaken there. As soon as you get Git you will not want to use anything else. It has quite a learning curve and tends to frustrate at first (been there) but keeping at it will. Pay. Off.

@coffeerobot disable password authentication and you're probably fine.

@yarmo @kev As it turns out, "decentralized" is a system property that is more intended as a freedom for technical/admin users and that regular users just acknowledge. Just like not every user of Gimp is actually writing code for it even though they could. Most people just don't want to go through all the hassle. They just want to use the system.

It's hilarious that in SAP GUI they have a whole bunch forms for customizing stuff they call "visual design" and "interaction design" while, at the same time, your eyes burn from the sheer ugliness of all of it and you keep going "oh, I didn't expact that behaviour" the whole time you're using it. (And we all know surprises aren't what you're striving for when you do interaction design.)

@djoerd Sakai made some good points. But. MAP's user model was reverse engineered decades after its inception. And what user model would actually consider the differences between ranks 1 and 2 and between 2 and inf. the same?Maybe we as an IR community should identify classes of user models (e.g. "adhoc", "automated") and identify the best known measure for each class. Otherwise papers will be tempted to cherry-pick the measure that best shows the advantage of the paper's contribution.

@djoerd @arjen I'm a bit behind with regard to reading papers but there has been at least one paper that showed ad-hoc users can adapt well if retrieval engine effectiveness deteriorates. So ranks 1 and 2 might not make a big difference if the snippets are good, while 2 and inf. certainly do.

@djoerd @arjen how about nDCG@6? We can make it 10. But 20 is way too much in my opinion, if we want to measure just the first result page from a user's perspective.

Looking at the CIKM proceedings, I'm wondering why the Chinese colleagues bother with submitting papers in English to a western conference instead of publishing in Chinese in their own venue, "nudging" everyone to learn Chinese or miss out on all those papers.
