Hatch would like me to quit reading and Do Something Interesting (but he's now settled for moping on my feet)I got the book from https://paperbacksandfrybread.com/ which is my new favourite bookstore. I'm reading "To Shape A Dragon's Breath." This is a "magic school with dragons" but the protagonist is indigenous and she's stuck with the culture shock of going to the only available dragon school with a bunch of people who think she's uncivilized and... Look, the culture shock is a pretty common theme in young adult fantasy but hers feels deeply real to me in ways that I'm not sure I could explain. It's hooking into some part of hindbrain from my own cultural adaptation to the US and the small moments of "Oh your English is so good" (thanks, it's my native language) from my experience as an off-white teenager. But more than that, the author is a genius of using language and stories and myths shared among people and cultures. I'm only halfway through and I *need* there to be more in this series so you should all go buy a copy or request it at your library.Which is all to say that poor Hatch might have to wait until I get hungry before I get up 😅#DogsOfMastodon #dog #book #IndigenousFantasy #bookstodon #BookReview

Anyone looking for a good RSS feed reader for android? After Feedly started injecting ads and AI nonsense, I tried a few different options and hated most of them. But I finally have found Feeder, available from f-droid. And it's finally the replacement I needed.There's a few things I miss (swiping for the next story is the biggest one) but importing my OPML config and being able to just start reading my existing feeds was great. I like that I can still see unread counts on all my feeds on the side if I want, and the view configurations were slightly better than what I had before.(And while you've got f-droid installed, you can get dns66 too. Because ad blocking is an essential part of security now. Think of it like your virus scanner in the 90s!)#rss #OpenSource

I really love this description of a retracted study: not only does it explain what was retracted (turns out men don't generally divorce their sick wives), but also it covers what the error was (a coding problem treated people who left the study as divorced) how it all went down (someone tried to replicate, asked for data and didn't get the same analysis. Contacted the authors and they were horrified and immediately worked to retract).It's a really nice story of why replication matters and how to be good at science. Ugh, Python got over 500 #GSoC applications this year and so many of them are absolutely trash, didn't follow any of the instructions. Most years about half of our applications are like this. But usually we have a lot fewer applicants and the submissions were blank files not plausible AI nonsense.So I'm stuck reading hundreds of incredibly low quality nonsensical submissions today in hopes to take some workload off my other unpaid volunteer mentors. This is not the volunteer gig I signed up for 15 years ago when it was mostly working with new contributors and not their AI chatbots and I'm grumpy.#AI #Python #OpenSource

@pleia2 I highly recommend a clear piggy bank for this because if your kids are anything like mine is then they will suddenly be really excited to put away lost buttons. (There's not nearly as much leftover change from international travel stuck in the corners of my house any more either)
