@elb @SDF I see you've upgraded com with audible notifications when someone speaks :)

@elb I was always jealous of people who had these "authentic" sound cards, the ones where the model name actually exists in a game's audio configuration tool.

@codewiz @xerz It looks to me that nothing has changed regarding str/String containing valid UTF-8. The difference is that if you use `unsafe` to force invalid data into that memory location, that's no longer insta-UB per the language spec - it will just crash or do something horrible when you try to call one of the methods that assumed it was valid. Am I misunderstanding something?

@codewiz @xerz Yes, Strings and string slices are still guaranteed to be UTF-8 in safe code per the docs.

The existence of noise-cancelling headphones suggests the possibility of noise-enhancing headphones

@urusan I chose "calculator". Even for something as basic as calculating a mean, doing longhand addition and division is only a distraction from the lesson. Meanwhile, a physical calculator remains (IMO) the single fastest numerical computation device where the bottleneck is the user typing digits, and it's a cheap and consistent for a teacher to provide for an entire classroom.

I’m going to let everyone in on a little secret, a secret handshake that occurs in internet discussions. The group is people who use the en dash to correctly indicate numeric ranges like 3–4. They will never point it out but I guarantee to you they’re nodding to each other smugly when they see it.

@kzimmermann If your hard drive is unencrypted and there's any chance it will be stolen by a thief determined to get at your key, then a strong password would a good idea. I always set a password "just in case", but I always figured if someone has owned me sufficiently to read my homedir they're going to have no trouble capturing my keystrokes the next time I decrypt something.

@wizzwizz4 @janriemer It's misleading to think of Example::Hi(x) as some sort of constructor. The way your enum is defined, () represents a tuple. e.g. for contrast you could have written:enum Example { Hi { index: u64 }, Question(bool)}I broadly agree there might be syntax shortcuts to make your use-case easier but I'm not convinced it would work in the way you suggest.

@kev Give it a shot for sure. It's come a very long way since the buggy arrival of KDE 4. The basic apps like dolphin (file manager) and okular (pdf viewer) are top notch IMO.

@kev I cannot confirm “easily fixed” - I spent half an hour fiddling with variables only to find it was still huge in the editor. Ended up going back to Twenty Sixteen.
