@mcc for the indie game dev use case, SyncThing might fit the bill? "Here's the folder of game assets, contents are automatically synchronized between all parties"https://syncthing.net/Open source, publicly-documented protocol, uses TLS for encrypting data over-the-wire.

@futurebird and then people will turn around and complain about how houses aren't built well these days because of all the unskilled laborers, as if these day laborers are the ones causing the problems instead of the house builders trying to cut costs. I'm also constantly amazed at how well anti-union propaganda worked in the US.

@mcc I wish we would have figured out a workable self-hosting solution—or even better an actually-distributed VCS—instead of everyone just switching to The Next Popular Platform so we could have it happen all over again.

@mcc yeah that's fair. I guess "actually distributed" would be nice, although you'd need some way of actually ensuring replication. Maybe the right goal here would be "all of the project details exist in the repository alongside the code"? It's easy enough to publish a git repository to some other host, but the issues/pull requests/etc are much harder.

My cat Rainbow likes to sit in this basket in my bathroom. My daughter painted a portrait of Rainbow in the basket. I hung it in the bathroom, naturally. Then I got a photo of Rainbow sitting in the basket underneath the painting.

@zkat @b0rk when things felt good at Mozilla there was some of this feeling, even if it wasn't reflected in the org structure. There were volunteer contributors in all parts of the process: developers, module owners, QA, localizers, community support, (I could go on and on). It felt empowering to run Nightly builds and file bug reports, like it was actually making things better.
