@BrodieOnLinux I predict I am going to be violently roasted for saying this, but people hate Ada for the same reasons they love Rust

@BrodieOnLinux it's a programming language from the 80s that can roughly and crudely be summed up as "Rust but with Pascal syntax"People hated it because all the memory safety features created overhead which made things slower and bloated compared to languages like C, and blamed the US Air Force for it because they were the main force driving its adoption (despite being made by the French!)The language is very FOSS nowadays, the official specs are freely available and the official compiler is part of GCC, so it mirrors Rust even moreso nowadays.

https://www.theregister.com/2025/08/19/uk_commissioner_suggests_govt_stop/> In a report published today, Dame Rachel de Souza said ministers should force VPN providers to build in "highly effective age assurance" to stop under-18s from dodging the Online Safety Act's restrictions. Without action, she warned, the government's long-awaited age verification rules risk being rendered "inadequate."

@BrodieOnLinux aw shit. Only thing really stopping me from migrating to a BSD is that a bunch of software that I deem critical (like the official desktop client for Discord, for streaming and video calling) don't have versions available. I'd have to sit down and make a proper list of everything when I'm not on my phone so don't take the one example as the only blocker

@foone @misty if you had an N64 and Pokémon Stadium, you could get this *officially* by unlocking speed multipliers for the GB Tower. The first upgrade was perfect for regular play, the second upgrade made grinding take no time at all

If the Steam Machine is priced properly, we'll finally have a Linux desktop computer that can be used by any skill level out of the box

@mothcompute at one point yes, part of a project to make FreeBSD more accessible iirc. But they removed it from the DVD image (which is the largest possible collection) because of space concerns. Which means no graphical desktop that is sane out of the box...

@lanodan @NanoRaptor oh I am very much aware of that, just that1) they are kind of hard to find in working shape for a reasonable price2) they aren't as capable as they used to be in this modern world3) I wish I could get a modern take on this form factor that doesn't cost an arm and a leg but is actually compatible with LinuxGPX Win devices get real close to solving point 3 but it sounds like running Linux on them is a royal pita and I don't want to use Windows 11

As for what I'm talking about in the second panel, well I would love to post a link to the original article I read back then (I think we skewed the timeline here to make things flow better) but it appears that searching the internet has gone down the shitter because of AI hype. :blobfoxdeadinside: The jist is, researchers that were working on Alzheimer's treatments had created a medicine that did not do what they were hoping for, but it DID do something amazing they weren't expecting: it caused teeth to freaking regenerate! Thus, the medicine could be put into a biodegradable micro-sponge and shoved into the cavity, then sealed over. The medicine would then cause the tooth to regenerate away the rot and fill itself back in! No dental drill needed. I think the treatment is either limited to *very small* cavities, or it's still being researched. But in either case, we were SO CLOSE

As for the final panel... yeah I did not have fun. The worst part was actually the novacaine, I must have reacted Very Poorly to it, as I had lost consciousness and I kept hearing my dentist go "you there?" on repeat as I was, uhhhhhhhh... not entirely there? And when I pulled myself back into consciousness I immediately felt like puking.

@asie Had to look this up, and surprisingly I found the manuals for this CPU https://global.epson.com/products_and_drivers/semicon/pdf/id000859.pdf and the ISA itself! https://global.epson.com/products_and_drivers/semicon/pdf/id000569.pdf
