firefox is great because it requires almost 2 M1 cores to play a video file

trying some android masto clients:tusky is overall best imo. decent ui. good (Twitter style) handling of replies I've seen (trades being able to see everything for easy readability). Could have better notifications (toot (ios) still does it best!) & search is annoyingmegalodon has nicer UI. replies are not great (every reply is recursively shown in one long list with barely any indication what's replying to what). notifications are not great either. tooot has best replies handling (nested, think reddit). notifications are meh. quite slow and annoying to use. Also shows toots from blocked instances?fedi has UI that is good taste, but not well implemented. won't show toot text half the time for whatever reason. notifications don't show anything other than the action and the usertwidere is the app I used for Twitter in 2016, and looks like it hasn't been updated since. Can't even access settings on modern Android. has some interesting design choices but from what I can see it's OK.ivory doesn't work.

fun fact about vscode:every time you make a change to a file it copies it to ~/Library/Application Support/Code/User/History or the appdata folder on Windows.have fun with that information if you edit files with sensitive information in them

while having the history is definitely a handy feature, it's a privacy footgun and should really be off by default:there seems to be no retention policy, on my old install, it has history dating from April 2022 (when the feature was introduced) to dec 2022 (when i wiped that machine)it stores 50 entries per fileit stores the file path, modified time for each entry and the entire file contents at that timeit can be disabled with the workbench.localHistory.enabled preferenceit is barely documented, only mentioned in this change log from when it was introduced https://code.visualstudio.com/updates/v1_66#_local-history

@fsf shout out to google for merging a line of code into one of the web USB standards that blocks "access to certain proprietary functionality."

CRD (https://www.youtube.com/CathodeRayDude, who is not on here i don't think) talked about weird utility software from the nineties having so much feature creep the defaults are so detached from what a regular user is expectingand then you remember the vivaldi browser (@Vivaldi) seems to default to only loading images when you press a hotkey and it blasts you right back to utility software of the ninties(either that or I accidentally toggled them off)

also, as an aside, Vivaldi is kinda weird? The browser's UI itsself is a Chrome extension. It's written in HTML and shows up in the inspector as an extension page with ID mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimlichrome's ui is written entirely as native codefirefox' UI is written in some XUL with left HTMLvivaldi is just, a react app, and takes 2 seconds longer to spin up a new window

it's so much "just a webpage" you can delete the extensionand it crashes on launch BUT you can delete all the HTML and you just geta full page chrome 404 error
