@winterschon I've worked for RedHat and Canonical for a similar timeframe. Yet, I prefer RPM SPECs and Kickstart for enterprise implementation and deployment, especially for building private repositories. Even after so many years, I still struggle to understand the logic behind .deb packaging and apt. Yet, in the Linux world, Debian seems to be the only major distro that has remained truly free. So, I adapted to the job or requirements needed.I have zero experience with packaging on apk and near-to-zero with pkg.I also dislike the approach of reinventing the wheel rather than branching and experimenting with new avenues of doing things. For example, as @david_chisnall said, a lot of time is wasted, especially after the change from apt-* to apt, and that could be addressed as a rewrite of part of the dep resolve engine, by branching and comparing results with different techniques. I feel however that's mostly a human problem rather than a software problem: managing large communities is hard, and each group thinks they're the best rather than making a truly scientific comparison between implementations (we used to do that in the Linux community in the earlier days). With my little experience so far, I believe FreeBSD is superior because it has (on average) a smaller community, a more "educated" (i.e. technically advanced) base, a willingness to contribute to the same base and not to fork, and fewer people to take core decisions.

This ๐ I feel we lost something precious in the new "cloud" world [1]. The habit of having multiple segregated environments (dev, qa/staging, pre-prod, prod). Pre-prod was an exactly scaled-down version of production in which performance and final acceptance testing were done. Somehow, we lost this habit in many companies. Quoting from the article below "too many orgs fail to provide management directives which involve full Perf+Reg test coverage."Somehow, management's narrow vision of saving at all costs and shipping products as fast as you can, counselled by inexperienced "I'm cool" developers, failed to adopt well established engineering habits (not limited to perf/tests) that have been there for a reason. It's s reason that sometimes those people don't fully understand but whose results are on display every day. Thanks @winterschon for this article.https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/@winterschon/112968136786759049#cloud #production #productiondiary [1] It's not a direct public cloud fault, but rather the general approach.

On behalf of the @FreeBSDFoundation and the Enterprise WG, we're pleased to announce the "Podman test project".From September 2 to October 11, 2024, the FreeBSD Open Container Initiative Runtime Extension Working Group is hosting a time-boxed testing project for its experimental implementation of Podman. If youโre comfortable with experimental software and have experience with Docker or Podman, we want you on board. You only need a machine running FreeBSD 13.2 or later (possibly with the latest) with ZFS storage.More information on:https://github.com/oci-playground/freebsd-podman-testingWe want this test to be successful. This is IMHO a significant step toward a wider acceptance of FreeBSD as a viable enterprise platform to a broader audience.I'm glad to have contributed to this project. I need to thank Alice from the @FreeBSDFoundation and Doug (@dfr) for having worked on this so much. Also, the base FreeBSD OCI images are kindly provided by your trusted @tara and @winterschon ๐ค #freebsd #container #docker #podman #testing #enterprisewg #wideadoption #enterprise #datacenter

@justine, I embraced Linux at the same time you did. And I'm embracing FreeBSD. Is it an age thing? Maybe. I'm not young anymore ๐ฅบ ๐But I'm switching to FreeBSD because:1. I wanted to go back to my roots, and I love learning Operating Systems ๐คทโโ๏ธ I started learning IBM MVS before someone nudged me to FreeBSD. 2. I'm a bit tired of some overcomplications brought to Linux. Not that I cannot handle them technically. I feel Linux has been bloated by tech companies wanting to push their agenda. It's ok for work, but ... for my pleasure? I know this is a controversial topic.3. This is probably because it is an age thing related to the former point. I'm tired of "fighting" wars, at least in my spare time. I don't want to attend conferences where people want to show off (I do that for work, but please not in my spare time). A classical phrase from this old lady is "just leave me alone and let me enjoy the technology."

I wrote a small script to generate (random) private IPv6 network address.I'm not sure if it will be useful to anyone. I use it in many places, like generating Wireguard private addresses or in network testing environments. As I'm slowly migrating to Codeberg, I decided to share this. It should work on FreeBSD, Linux and MacOS.https://codeberg.org/tarastella/ipv6-net-generator#ipv6 #network #wireguard #vpn #intranet #macos #freebsd #linux

I've read only today about a woman being kicked off a flight kicked out of a flight because she misgendered a flight attendant a couple of months ago. I won't enter into specifics of the story, nor comment on it as a pilot/captain.But I will say some words as a human being because it's happened to me so much lately. Please, do not misgender or deadname someone. Don't make fun of somebody's body or dressing, even if it might seem to you as an innocent joke. It's humiliating and destabilizing. We are already fighting a big battle inside our brains, more than you can imagine and perhaps more than it appears from the outside. Not everybody is so strong.Your words or attitude can change our day from a bright one to the day we might do something stupid. It doesn't take much to be kind. In doubt, it's ok to ask.#genderdysphoria #bodydysmorphia #misgender #deadname #transgender
