so my mom is becoming more and more distrustful towards vaccines, and is on the path to becoming a full-on antivaxxer. i’m not sure how to talk to her about it -- she’s very suspicious of mainstream medicine (and the scientific method) already, so we don’t really share a common foundation.does anyone know of resources that i can read and/or share with her about this?

decentralization does not (necessarily) mean censorship resistanceif a nation state can block access to a domain, they can trivially block access to all the domains listed on fediverse.space or similar sites

@polychrome yeah, web interfaces and the like help. i discovered thelounge after writing this and it’s now my main client...but i think we should be asking ourselves why (almost) only tech people use IRC to communicate. there’s clearly *something* keeping away everyone else.

@thegibson there are loads of attacks against tor, but this just seems like a very good crawler, no? those have been around for a while and tor’s core selling points still hold true

@riking that's probably true, but i'm not convinced that that justifies the exclusion of non-techies or the high level of effort for people to joinas in, one person occasionally maintaining a rocket.chat server (or w/e) vs. fifty people on the project all having to set up IRC bouncers and such

@tastytea a good thing to do might be to have a brief look at their dataset and see if you can discover any real names, thus disproving their claim of not having any personally identifiable information... then email them, or their department, to ask about the legality of this.

if you’re an instance admin, go to settings / administration / site settings and uncheck “Allow unauthenticated access to public timeline”. while you’re at it, maybe check “Opt users out of search engine indexing by default”.#mastoAdmin #fediPrivacy
