on my motorola droid4 under maemo-leste, dino with only a couple of almost always silent chats, heats the device.on the same device pidgin with more than 20 chats, many very active, doesn't heat the device at all!i don't know what in dino makes it heavy.maybe newer versions of gtk?or, since i use a network home on my computer, i noticed, with bad connection dino doesn't work well. probably it relies on heavy i/o with the database.and therefore, it also brings the battery down much faster than pidgin. and probably it wears emmc down much faster too.#dino #pidgin #maemo #droid #linux #xmpp #jabber

i may try to write here again.it is very hard to keep to streams and i mostly write on my armenian language stream. thank you for engaging with me there.(it is crazy that in this age of ai we still don't have a good usable babel fish to read everything in any language)recently i was also hanging out on gemini://bbs.geminispace.org.i tend to like gemini a lot. and i love fediverse. there is an interesting project, called tootik - it is written in my favourite of mainstream languages - go, and user interacts with it via a gemini browser.writing on geminispace and be read on the web space, and vice versa - this is amazing. so i may install it one day.i need to understand how to reverse proxy tls connections and host several gemini capsules on one actual server.there are several related discussions on the currently one bubble instance:gemini://bbs.geminispace.org/s/Gemini/3233gemini://bbs.geminispace.org/s/Geminispace/3330#gemini #geminispace

as if js would increasy the security of the tls connection.well, the site needs to check if i am a bot, show me a captcha maybe, they will need a js for that i guess.and when using tor, cloudflare has similar messages, telling me that it checks if the connection is secure. in reality it checks if i am a bot or not.that's #hypocicy and #pharisaism of big tech on the #internet.

however i think, the internet i like is a hobbyist network. no ads, collection of many small servers.however i think, it's not possible to 'earn' money on the internet without ads, or without exploiting the current state, that most of the users aren't literate enough to communicate on the network (message, have a web presence, site, page, blog, rss feed) without using big corporate technologies.they don't know about the alternatives even and it is hard to explain the decentralized way of life. if we didn't have email, it would be even harder, at least today we can use the example of email. and still it is hard to perceive and understand for many people.#decentralization #internet

perhaps ssb - secure #scuttlebutt would be easy - no need to make so many choices.you don't need to choose a username and you don't need to choose a server. your key pair describes your identity.but you still need to choose a client software. you still need to connect to some pub/room servers, if you want to get updates over the network and communicate with people you don't see in person.but #ssb is so weird for people it is also hard to perceive. it is so much different that even jabber/activity pub feels much more natural.

also making choices are weird for them.they need to choose a server, then choose a username, then choose the client software, then login, then add some contacts.in case of email, they just have the default choice: gmail.if it was mail.com, or email.com, perhaps they wouldn't even understand that mail is a protocol, not a service.something like whatsapp will take the phone number as a username, will take the address book and generate a contact list (while knowing all the human connections) - so no choices and 'extra work' is necessary.whenever i register someone on some jabber network, they say 'it is so hard, it is for programmers'.

so, i wanted to write that i guess today we are living in the age of cyperpunk already.i was reading /s/retrocomputing on gemini://bbs.geminispace.org, and i wanted to share that i always have in my pocket motorola droid 4 phone.it doesn't work as phone at all. it has no sim card in it. and i don't like 'phones', since even when using floss lineageos or grapheneos, it's sort of a 'phone os' and not a real operating system. i have a feeling that i use the tv or radio, not a computing device.do you remember the time when in order to run 'linux', whatever it means, we had to carefully choose the hardware for it. the network card, for instance, that would be supported in kernel.same here, i use motorola droid 4 with modern linux kernel and devuan based operating system called maemo-leste. it has some open source parts of nokia's maemo fremantle, but fremantle didn't work over official debian, it worked over the fork. and one was not able to just add a debian repo and apt-get install from it. it is perfectly possible with maemo-leste today. i guess it was because nokia's stuff was not interested in anything other than preparing their own operating system by using existing open source solutions. they didn't care if it was compatible with debian version it is based on. they just needed to build something, and push it to the market.and so i have the device which runs modern, up to date linux distribution. and it runs almost only free software. so i guess using it also can be considered as retrocomputing - it is used as computer.and when i was thinking about retrocomputing back when i just started to know about the movement, i noticed i really liked when people were writing modern software for the old machines. and to me retrocomputing was also about it.today, since i love lowtech, and i believe lowtech will always exist, and we will be able to always utilize tech that does not require many dependencies and can be written by one person in feasible time by using tools that were also created by one person in feasible time, i think lowtech will always be alive. and therefore retrocomputers will always be alive, because we can write lowtech enough software to run on them and utilize them. we often do not need something more powerful.#lowtech #gemini #maemo #cyberpunk #linux #retrocomputing
