@Shamar Thank you, I really appreciate your comments and share your view. It's consistent with what I observe.

@klaatu It's a real scenario. That's the repo: https://codeberg.org/librecell/lctime(here it was originally, but I'm reorganizing the code base https://codeberg.org/tok/librecell)'lctime' very specific to the design of digital integrated circuits. lctime does 'characterization'. This means simulating the signal propagation speeds in logic cells (inverters, AND gates, flip-flops and the like).

@klaatu lctime is a command-line tools. That may not sound like a typical case for the AGPL. But I observe a growing trend towards cloud-based services for electronic design automation.'Characterization' is very compute intense because it runs tons of circuit simulations. Therefore it is very interesting to wrap that into a service. That's why I chose the AGPL.

#Google does not fund research groups if they'd work on software licensed under #AGPL.Use the AGPL to incentivize people not to get funded by Google.

@Shamar I find it interesting that the Hacking Licence mentions 'mask rights'. Seems like you give some thoughts to integrated circuits. Regarding free and open-source licences I know of only little work related to ICs. I'm only aware of the CERN OHL.What was your motivation to mention mask right? Did you have more thoughts about crafting the Hacking Licence to be suitable for silicon chips or is it more a side effect?

@tk If you're already familiar with C-like languages, Python or Java then Rust will require you to think differently about certain things (for example ownership and lifetimes of references). For me it helped to sharpen my mind. I suspect Go teaches you less new concepts. Also, Go is quite googlish. Rust at least is a mix of amazonish, googlish, metaish, huawaish, microsoftish.

@humanetech In my opinion Microsoft doesn't deserve that the FLOSS community advertises in some way their products.VSCodium is still a MS product. Advertising it or contributing to it still helps MS to build a better image and a better product.True, true, MS may contribute to open-source but mostly knows how to *exploit* open-source.The vast majority of their products are still proprietary and not human friendly. And I think this is getting worse.Let's not fall for the PR.

@ArneBab @humanetech Exactly that: "Use a copyleft-licensed project with outside contributors if you want the project to stay free."And as mentioned, the outside contributors must remain copyright holders of their contribution. So there should not be any transfer of the Copyright upon contribution.

@aral Is this a generally accepted meaning of 'startup'? I always thought the term refers to any type of new company, but have no clue.
