I've now nuked and paved my #RaspberryPi 4B for the 4th time. By now I've learnt from experience that SDs aren't meant to last holding the entire filesystem. After another case of "Segmentation fault" (likely corrupted SD), I've moved the filesystem to a USB. Depending on performance, I may reattempt moving everything to a partition of a 1TB HDD being used primarily for #Plex.#selfhosting #linux #foss

@fatboyI loved the idea of xmpp once I self-hosted it on one of my own instances but, try as I might, just got no interest from others, so it was never used. Same goes for @session unfortunately. It sucks that a lot of the time you know a service/app makes sense, but the network effect is an uphill battle.

@swashberryI'd say use Codeberg ideally, but personally I also use GitLab (I'm still on the fence). As for your site, why not just rent a cheap Linode VPS and self host? I think one of the best things I ever did was learn to develop my own static site and host it myself. Not only is it a great feeling / useful skill - it also means you can host it wherever you want.

@swashberryOnly just seen this, so disregard my suggestions about self-hosting if this isn't possible for you. @nytpu @tobi

@swashberryThe beauty of doing your own site is it will evolve. You'll keep making improvements, learning new tricks and coming up with new ideas. It's amazing what you can do with some simple HTML and CSS! If you value organisation, tidiness and economy of code, I'd recommend looking into preprocessors like Less and Sass.

What #DNS provider do you use and why? I use DNS Watch by default as it's preset in #Pihole and my modem. I was originally drawn to #Cloudflare for its promises of #privacy and no #censorship, but I've since noticed all the bad press. I'm interested in OpenDNS and LibreDNS but it would be good to read some kind of in-depth comparison if one is available. #networking #homenetwork #FOSS

All but set on #migrating services from my two VPSs to a single #VPS at @linode. I also want to weigh up #Apache vs #Nginx, particularly in terms of setting up reverse proxies so I can have multiple services running on subdomains. Thoughts?#networking #server #linode

Anyone here use #Qubes? I'd be interested to know your thoughts. I have a spare laptop and feel like trying it out. I love the idea of compartmentalisation and #virtualisation for maximum #privacy and #security, just don't know yet if I'd want to use it on a daily basis, and how it compares to just spinning up multiple VMs in #VirtualBox. #VM #Xen #hypervisor

@FreePietjeSo far I've had no luck even installing it (due to X not starting, a common driver issue, I think), so I don't imagine I'll even get round to trying it, at least anytime soon. I think maybe for my purpose and threat model, and because I'm happy with my current setup, VirtualBox VMs are the probably the way to go.

@rysiekI was also thinking of writing about my adoption of Plausible, and more generally how analytics can be done ethically.

@ericbuijs same for me. I tried OrganicMaps and much prefer it now. Better look and feel, gyro works on my LineageOS handset etc. Only annoying thing is you don't seem to be able to set bookmarks as position and destination. And location services sometimes just doesn't work. But then that may just be my phone.

I'm after Mastodon instance recommendations in case I need to move soon. My interests are pretty obvious if you check out my profile: #FOSS #privacy #security #decentralisation #development Boosts appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've decided to move to the @fosstodon #Mastodon instance. The name came up plenty of times before, I've read good things and I recently learnt profits go to #FOSS projects - plenty of which I rely on and love. This is something I want to get behind as a FOSS advocate. I only wish #crypto donations were accepted. Hopefully the move goes as smoothly as last time.
