@hackaday "bloat" generally. The absurd amount of this party connections being made, and superficially unnecessary processing. Be honest with us. Run a good service ...

The @PINE64 #PinetabV is real and in my hands! Nice keyboard case with touchpad too. Hope I can get some time to play with it properly so it isn't just a door stop, although it came with a kennel installed on it which is more than I had expected 😁 #RISCV

So the @PINE64 #pinetabv now has a fundamentally functional - with some caveats - usable desktop boot image. Touch screen and WiFi are good. Git and Firefox work. And here's a photo of it running Node.js v20.5.1 and an early access build of #Adoptium #Temurin 21 😁😍 #OpenJDK #Java #NodeJSCredit to @Fishwaldo for getting this KDE Plasma image available!https://wiki.pine64.org/wiki/PineTab-V

The formal release of #Adoptium #Temurin JDK21 will be delayed slightly until we can get a copy of the TCK under the new OCTLA4 license (https://openjdk.org/groups/conformance/JckAccess/)For now, the latest nightly/beta/ea builds from https://adoptium.net/temurin/nightly/?version=21 were built from the same tag as the GA level so should be functionality identical (But are untested, not for production use etc. etc. #disclaimer), and additionally include builds for Linux/risc64, Windows/aarch64 and Alpine/aarch64#java #openjdk

Update on delay of #Temurin 21 availability. We are as dissapointed as you are that we can't make the GA version available yet, but you have an option ... #OpenJDK #java https://adoptium.net/blog/2023/09/temurin21-delay

TCK access issues for Adoptium's Eclipse Temurin have been resolved. We're working to get it through the suite now so we can get it to you this week (hopefully)

#Adoptium has now released the initial platforms for Eclipse #Temurin 21. This includes Alpine on aarch64 (Tarball only, docket image to follow) which a subset of our Mac M1 users will no doubt be delighted about!Note: The regular #openjdk update cycle means there will be a follow-on release (jdk-21.0.1) next week which supercedes this build, but we choose to continue with the initial release to ensure all of the processes & tests for 21 are all working as they should.https://adoptium.net/temurin/releases/

IBM's AIX OS is still going strong - I keep seeing references to it (*)On a side note - back in the day where was a version of AIX that ran on the PS/2 (The IBM PC, not the playstation). I had the attack of floppy disks for it ...(*) Any similarity between these images and the AIX OS is purely coincidental 🤣

Sort of related (Weird OS+architecture variants) - I have a #PowerPC laptop from a long time ago. It runs #AIX. There was technically also a version of #Solaris (I think it was 2.5.1.) that ran on it. I never found a copy to try it though. If anyone has one ...

@bloor One typically used minicom instead of screen for such things, but I don't recall off hand how it deals with CTL-Q .... Maybe with a shot though

@bloor @bloor Although I guess since CTL-Q is XON there may not be a workaround for it over serial so it possibly won't work over anything unless you can remap the app somehow 🤔

Hmmm do the @frameworkcomputer laptops really not have a touch screen option? Deal breaker for me, even if there may be an update later on 😭😭😭 #framework

@frameworkcomputer Ah not available yet. But thanks - is missed that announcement and it looks interesting especially if the smaller version can take the next versions of the #riscv boards.Potentially a nice replacement for my aging Lenovo x220t 2-in-1 😁

Anyone remember the time when Chrome was considered a resource hog (mostly because it had better isolation between tabs)I feel #Firefox is worse now. I run #Chromium too but firefox does seem to deteriorate more than #ChromiumHaving had firefox get killed by the OS I've just done a "swapoff -a; swapon -a" to make the system more responsive again 🙄

@GrapheneOS @frej Can you give some information on what you consider "atrocious security"? I'm not a customer (I have a Jolla C2 instead 😉) but I like their approach as a company generally so curious as to what their issues are (Feel free to DM if you'd rather not say openly)

It's one of those days where it feels like I'm having about 6000 discussions on things with different people. I'm quite enjoying it 🙂 One of the discussions was relating to systems that we have hosted at @hetzner Every so often on there I see people asking for hosting recommendations and often people suggest #Hetzner as a recommendation. Very cost effective, and in my experience of running important servers for many years, extremely reliable 👍
