@diodelass I deeply appreciate the wariness about Google. All I can say is there is a team of people who are very committed to open source and open platforms working on Fuchsia and I believe the engineering team would push back hard against the dystopian future of locked down horrible vendor blob drivers. There's a lot of inspiration from the Chrome and CrOS folks here too, who are a very committed to open-source bunch.I sincerely hope we prove your worries unfounded.

@ceejbot Creeps is a MOBA-ism (the little enemies that spawn in each lane and march toward the opposing side). Whereas "The Creep" is the sludge the Zerg spread under and around their buildings (Starcraft).I'm always amused when the MUD-derived jargon is (mis-)identified as being from games that came 10s of years later.C64Trivia: The VIC-II graphics chip had MOBs (Mobile Object Blocks), these days more commonly Sprites.

@ceejbot I wish Rust was as standalone as C (not excited about package managers with 100s of dependencies as part of a workflow). Go is a little better, but unsuited for smaller embedded or non-server stuff.

@ceejbot It's about not needing all that baggage to do simple things. I don't mind that it's all there for folks that want it or projects that need it. I'm annoyed that (last I looked) there were no clear docs for how to *just* use the compiler without using cargo and its 100s of deps, and the core library layering was very libc dependent and all or nothing-ish (not embedded friendly). People love saying C is crap and then offering solutions that bring their own, different problems.

@ceejbot that's similar to "explain what this code does?" / "what's wrong with this code?" -- but I do like the documentation slant on it.

@ceejbot My hatred for java has much more to do with the company that owns it than anything technical about it. Never again.

@ceejbot I quit my job. I plan to spend a nontrivial time not-employed. I am very enthused about this change in my life.

@ceejbot Some of that sort of falls out of Go's insistence on being its own thing and its inefficiencies around native (C ABI) library interop and the like. Go projects work best when they're entirely in Go, don't have to do excessive green thread wrangling around native calls or syscalls, etc.I'm in favor of well-designed standard libraries, but also in favor of sane layering so I can pick and choose how much baggage they contribute to my projects.

@ceejbot Wow: "Swift's compiler is so slow that teams are rediscovering forms of framework-oriented programming as a self-defense mechanism. In order to get feedback cycles down from ludicrously bad to just plain awful, they split up their projects into independent frameworks that they then compile and run independently during development. So in a somewhat roundabout way, Swift is encouraging good development practices."Glacial compilation speeds also plague Rust and many C++ projects...

@ceejbot Which case? What's your planned built? I'm really tempted to build a 3900X replacement for my Linux workstation (i7-9700K) and then have that machine take over for my more elderly win7 box....PC desktop cases make me sad -- I don't need a ton of drive bays and whatnot, just want something to contain the PSU/GPU/mainboard and have enough elbow room for cabling.

@ceejbot I went with a NZXT H200 when I upgraded my lunix workstation last (https://www.nzxt.com/products/h200-matte-white), which could work for this or maybe a H500 if I go for fullsize ATX madness (https://www.nzxt.com/products/h500-matte-white). Sadly the 3900X seems to be out of stock everywhere.

@ceejbot fiddling with a tiny compiler for a toy language and poking at some 2nd-tier Zach-like games. Curious to hear what you make of Death Stranding -- reviews have been... interesting.

@ceejbot Only non-native Californians can truly appreciate the day in the fall where, after roughly nine months of horrifying lack of any variation in weather* rain finally occurs.* brush fires do not technically qualify as weather
