       @anneapplebaum There are sometimes-shit-happens accidents, and there are at-fault accidents.When I was in forensics I used fault trees to understand the causes of events. There's no such thing as a single root cause; every event has multiple causes, each of which has multiple causes, ad infinitum. But we stop tracing backward when we find an unreasonable choice.Ukraine shooting down a missile is reasonable. Russia launching it in the first place is not. Russia is responsible.

       Literally everyone was right. The Brothers Karamazov is fantastic. I'm about 6% of the way in, I'm not sure if it even has a plot, and I don't care.

       Wow, the 1800s were a wild time in Christian edge-case movements. In a relatively short span we get the Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, "Christian Science" (the crazy ones who don't believe in medicine), dispensational theology and associated per-millennial rapture, the restoration movement (and thus churches of Christ)... I need to learn more about this.

       There are many Democrat-leaning cities in single-party Republican states. Those cities are essentially being treated as captives, prisoners, never to be given even the slightest input into how their government operates.You can love your neighbor, or you can support policies like that.        So in Jewish tradition, a man is obligated to have sex with his wife, and she with her husband. Their sexual needs and desires are each others' responsibility.So if Mary and Joseph never have sex even after Jesus was born, that implies neither of them wanted it. Which makes Mary a VERY unusual presumptive-teenage girl, but she could be asexual, sure, immaculate conception and all. Joseph, on the other hand, has to be a functioning heterosexual to have fathered other children.

       I missed out on a lot of classic literature, which I'm trying to correct. So I've just read The Great Gatsby for the first time, and then To Kill a Mockingbird for the first time that I actually remember and understand it. And I was thinking of moving on to the Diary of Anne Frank, but now I'm compelled to ask: are there any great books everyone has to read that aren't about how much humanity sucks? Is that, like, a prerequisite for great literature?
