@to3k Alongside a safe password manager - what about search engines built to respect privacy? Which search engine do you prefer to move off Google?

@MrDread DuckDuckGo is not a private search engine. Moreover, they closely collaborate with Microsoft, a Big Tech company who won 2023 Big Brother Awards.

Remember we announced on our Codeberg repository we plan to be more independent? That's right, shortly we will have our own index based on ElasticSearch. Before we switch to our own results system, we will be testing it on small subset of indexed pages, then gradually open our system to your websites! After growing our index enough, all other sources will be disabled by default except Wikipedia and Wikidata to power infoboxes. Even in the future, you'll be still able to re-enable 3rd-party sources if you deem our source impractical. For months we relied solely on 3rd-party sources, and yes - even our searches we do for you power the external algorithms, even those overseas and those of the biggest. We hope in next several months, if we will have enough time, to have big enough index to be used instead. Not only we are building a Polish search engine, we are now moving to our resources overtime, making us 21st-century future true alternative for Google - from an European Union country.

Our crawling system source code is now public! 🎉 We have licenced it on AGPL, the same licence SVMetaSearch uses, too.See https://codeberg.org/SVWareHouse/SVMetaSearch/src/branch/master/crawler for more.

Few days ago, Mastodon 4.2.0 has been released. Don't you mind if we include posts of people who consent to do so (through a profile setting) in our index?People who decide to drop the permission won't be indexed anymore (however we will continue to offer other people older posts, unless requested to take them down - for that, message us on Mastodon for faster clearance).

Politicians, mind your own business. You're afraid of affairs about you leaking public yet you want to strip us from privacy. That's hypocrisy.Article in Polish: https://oko.press/chat-control-komisja-europejska-pornografia-dzieciecaand in English: https://mullvad.net/en/blog/2023/2/1/eu-chat-control-law-will-ban-open-source-operating-systems/Over 72 percent of Europeans are AGAINST this bullshit legislation.Withdraw it, or else we'll withdraw from EU and host SVMetaSearch somewhere else.#GlobalEncryptionDay

Our suggestions to combat child sexual abuse:- ban sharenting (we'll stress on it no matter what)- invest in psychological & psychiatric education- withdraw Chat Control as it will make children more vulnerable to paedophiles and other cybercriminalsDo you hear us crystal clear, @EU_Commission?

Switching from Google to DuckDuckGo is like switching from cola to... a diet cola. The latter doesn't give you any significant health gains.Drink water instead. Use SVMetaSearch.

Just 2 weeks ahead of our 1st anniversary! We believed this project to die shortly after founding. But here we still are, and thanks to your continued support, we can provide ad-free (and of course, tracker-free) searches to everyone.Speaking of 2023 stats (2023.03.21 -- 2023.12.14 to be exact), here's the breakdown:- 50,409 searches done- 187 average daily searchesBecause we value transparency, we'd like to announce no grants were secured during our first year (we tried to apply for NGI Zero Trust funding, although to no avail). During entire year we've managed to collect mere ~52 PLN of donations through lead developer's LiberaPay account, of which 27 PLN was donated to @ftdl to keep both us and them afloat - as they provide us with space on their Mastodon instance, and with a server. On 31 December 2023 we'll publish final annual stats - remaining is just my "Merry Christmas" wishes, and HNY!

Search histories are most important thing, and the very valuable one for governments or Big Tech companies. We will be expanding our index and making algorithms better to offer you a true alternative, instead of outsourcing your queries to anyone else.At SVMetaSearch we do not collect any data that could be tied to you - only a timestamp of a search done is enough. That is a promise we've pled for since the beginning of our project.

Here are some reasons to spread the word about Peekr:1) We're free and open-source2) We're developing & hosting Peekr in Poland, one of EU member countries - safeguarding your rights to privacy3) We have our own index (and on request, you can pull some results from Google)4) We don't log any personal data, ever. What we log is the fact of search being made (without parameters!) and the timestamp of it, so we can know when to scale5) We have no ads and we are getting funding from donations6) We're powered by electricity from sustainable sources (solar panels)Try it out: https://peekr.org

Starting this night, we've divided our operations into two domains.First one, https://peekr.org, will serve you things we've already tested and are deemed stable.Second one, https://staging.peekr.org, will serve you all things, including those not well-tested.If you intend to switch to Peekr permanently, please stick with the former. If you are patient and want to help us squash bugs - go ahead and use the staging version.Appropriate branches (main for stable and staging for... well, staging) were also created in our repository.
