looks like Delta Chat multiple relay capability is rolling out, but based on what I've read so far I will be waiting a couple more point releases to set it up.coincidentally, the default server for new accounts had a disk failure the other day.

Firefox is becoming an AI browser and the internet is not at all happy about itThere's no such thing as bad publicity, they say. Mozilla must be clinging to that aphorism for dear life right now, what with the internet meltdown that met its announcement that Firefox is to become an AI browser over the next three years. This Reddit thread has 2,300 comments and counting, few of them complimentary. "Firefox was in prime position to become the anti-AI browser which is something there's real demand for. But no, let's chase trends instead," is one post that pretty much sums up the sentiment.Over on X, it's a similar story, with one user commenting (via Windows Central), "I've never seen a company so astoundingly out of touch with the people who want to use its software."https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/firefox-is-becoming-an-ai-browser-and-the-internet-is-not-at-all-happy-about-it/ #Mozilla #Firefox

whoa, Thinkpad T480 keyboards from Lenovo are like 85% off with free shipping right now ... I ordered 2, I'll probably sell the second when they run out of stock. @matthew

I've been "covering" (by boosting) the impact of genAI scumbags like Sam Altman on pricing in the couchlab segment, but on a personal note I'm so irritated, I'm finally really bumping against the limits of 32GB DDR4 on my laptop and upgrading to 64GB is wayyyyy out of reach now. I have to wonder if any fabs may restart DDR4 production, apparently some motherboard manufacturers are releasing new DDR4 boards again.my existing plan for my server fleet (of 3 Proxmox hosts) was to remain on DDR4 for at least one more upgrade cycle with the two services boxes, while upgrading to a DDR5 system for my personal/dev host. none of that is likely to happen in 2026 so it's not that big a deal there, I do eventually need to upgrade the box which has 32GB but hopefully the bubble will pop before then.

anyway I've seen speculation that a silver lining might be that it forces software devs to consider memory efficiency for a while. I certainly would like that. my problem on my laptop is that I tend to run multiple browsers at once, and huge browser sessions. to some extent I can reduce the impact by further sharding my browser sessions by topic. it's a pain but I've needed to do another round of this for a while.

(I'm an *extreme* tab hoarder, in large part because of how my flavor of ADHD attention works, combined with being cognitively "CPU bound" and subject to having my attention to a given topic pre-empted by sensory overload)

@matthew yeah, my "charging" port became dodgy like 18 months ago so I'm down to only the "data" port for power input... I'll likely have to find a repair shop and pay for the charging port to be fixed at some point. ugh.

@matthew thanks for these tips. I was indeed wondering about isopropyl.I wonder if I should get a new touchpad or if mine just needs a very thorough cleaning, I disabled it a year ago as its tendency to occasionally go crazy and start reporting wild spurious pointer movement and clicks was getting worse.

urgh, my newer 1TB Hitachi Travelstar 2.5" HDD is emitting an intermittent chirping noise, that doesn't seem good...

smartctl short test passes, but the load cycle count and power-off retract count are really high. gonna have to tweak sleep settings, it seems. only 814 power-on hours and it already has a much higher count for both of those values than my drive of the same model with over 20000 power-on hours.I really hope somebody comes out with a 7200rpm CMR HDD with a modern platter density soon, buying these new old stock ones for 60 bucks a pop isn't my favorite strategy in the world, and they're gonna sell out eventually.

it is slightly weird that that first number is exactly 128K+2, but even if this revision of this drive has some funny high raw value for the power-off retract count, that load cycle count at 815 hours is brutal 😐

meanwhile, the other one I've had for over two and a half years.a slightly different model, this one is a HTE721010A9E630 and the new (chirpy) one is a HTS721010A9E630... the listing from 'smartctl -a' is not quite the same.

@brettm hmm. it just started doing it though.maybe I should accelerate my plan to connect it via eSATA, it'd be better that way for other reasons as well.

is there some kind of kerfuffle happening re: dumbphone users?I have a smartphone made for a non-US market which stopped talking to US cell networks with the HSPA+ network shutdown, and getting a dumbphone which works over wifi was a lowkey game changer for me since Android ripped out OS-level support for generic SIP-based wifi calling.

if anyone wants to follow @fediseeds, that's my other project besides Surfhosting.the goal is to make it drastically easier for people to set up fedi instances, and thus increase the number of very small instances by a substantial margin.

and regarding all that... what can I say, I'm an extreme tab hoarder. like probably top 0.1% of the entire human race. it's a lifestyle I just can't quit.but regarding another topic that comes up here from time to time, being able to reliably hoard tabs has been a gamechanger for my ability to get things done given my particular flavor of neurodivergence, because I can leave mental state frozen for weeks or months and then come back to it when I'm able. for me that is a really big deal!!

@matthew meanwhile my "phone" hasn't talked to US cell towers in years due to being a Poco F1. I still (very rarely) use it as an actual phone on wifi though. but when I'm somewhere with my dedicated wifi phone, I prefer using that. the Poco is really just a handheld computer at this point.
